The Official Quantity Find list

Anyone know how many copies of Blues Inc. on Great Lakes constituted a quantity find?

I don't think that many (3 or 4) were ever turned up in one acquisition, which is my definition of a quantity find - at least 10 in one shot. The record has only surfaced from time to time
The only Fenton related label finds nabbed in lots larger than 10 at one time that I recall from the past:

JuJus (Fenton) probably 50, Tim had at least one 25 count box)
Legends probably 50, Tim had at least one 25 count box)
Mussies (25 at least)

OK, I will remove the Blues Inc. Only included because it was mentioned as quantity on the old Kopper forum. But if unconfirmed, out it goes!

Also, I think the Surface world disc by the Jades on Fenton was at least a 10++ find 5-6 years ago. I bought from the source if my memory serves me correct. And Blokes must have been 25++

Yep, you're right, Mr. Segment. Forgot about the Jades 2nd Fenton 45. I think that was 50 at least.
Until those were uncovered it was just as hard to find as the 1st one. When I made a purchase buy from the late, great Al Madden, one of the coolest rekkid wranglers I've ever met, I nabbed NM or VG++ copies of many cool Fentons. Only 45s I didn't get at that time in the buy were the two Jades and the Chentelles

About 20 years ago I got about 10 copies of the Scavengers' 45 on Fenton from a band member, the surfy instros "Curfue"/"Oasis". Condition ranged from vg to M-, and I gave/traded all but one of them away.

I am pretty sure that reasonable quantities of the two Soulbenders singles (on Phantasm, a Fenton imprint) were around - band member Aris Hampers is/was a DJ and I believe had family in the record sales/distribution business and later his own record store, and it seemed like he supplied a fair number of copies into the '80s (definitely a large amount of the picture sleeve for "7&7 Is" turned up, though possibly without vinyl). He also put out a CD comp of their material, mixed with later offshoot group Phlegethon.

Another major Fenton source was the late Michigan dealer Bob Stricker, who contacted a bunch of the bands back in the day and got quantities (unknown, probably smallish) of mint copies of the Quests "I'm Tempted"/"Shadows in the Night" (I got one of them in trade ca. 1992), the Legends (ditto), and the Blokes on Dante (ditto). When Al Madden died I was living in Grand Rapids, and after the dealers cherry-picked his huge stock of vinyl, there were sales of the leftovers for a buck apiece. Like many hopefuls I went through box after box laid out on tables in a hotel ballroom, and eventually found a handful of goodies like two copies of Johnny Buckett's Fortune EP with "Griddle Greasin' Daddy", as well as about 10 pristine copies of Ray Hummell III's "Fine Day"/"Gentle Rain" picture sleeve. There was no vinyl, though, and to this day I only have the sleeve, not the disc.

As for the Blues Company, I once found three M- "Experiment in Color" 45s on Great Lakes cheapish at a record show, one of which was signed, though that doesn't meet the threshold of 10 (I kept the signed one and traded the others). Not to go too far off topic from the quantity discussion, but speaking of that group, the disc I like the most by them, "I'm Comin'"/"You're Dead My Friend" on Pear seems to be exceedingly rare - or am I the only person who likes it?

Thank you for the information Franku! The Scavengers may be surfy but I appreciate the story. The Soulbenders and Blokes are already added. Indeed, the picture sleeve for "7&7 is" is far easier to locate than the actual 45. They were long offered as a bonus if you bought the compilation cd. That also goes for the Ray Hummell PS which I believe still is being given away together with the new re-issue from Swiss label (RR, label name escapes me)

But keep the stories coming, an ejoyable read :tiphat:

Glad the info was of use. I was lucky to find the "7&7 Is" 45 fairly clean at a Grand Rapids thrift store (in the same pile as a Renegades V "Wine Wine Wine" and Peter and the Prophets' fab "Don't Need Your Lovin'", for 50 cents apiece), but never did manage to pick up a sleeve.

Sure wish I would have hooked up with Al Madden like Mike did and gotten many of them in one fell swoop - !

Aris H. had a bit of quantity on both Soulbenders 45s, "Hey Joe" with pic sleeve, and "7 & 7" Is with art-drawn sleeve. He didn't tell me how many he still had left, but I bought both 45s with sleeves in unplayed condition from him in the mid '90s.

I like "You're Dead My Friend" by the Blues Co. the best out of their 3 45s myself, Frank - and I don't have a copy myself.

Al used to call me regularly on the phone. Never met him in person. He would mail me the 45s so I could inspect / play them and then we'd make the cash transaction. I guess he liked me since I was not a fan of Mr. Stricker. I did buy from Bob early on, but he screwed me over when he auctioned a weak VG Keggs 45. I had, and won with the highest bid. But Bob decided to trade it away for an Olivers on Phalanx. He used my bid as the basis for a rough value on the Keggs. I think Bob never intended to auction the Keggs off anyway. That type of behavior really pisses me off. And that was the end of my dealings with him.

Bob was (still is?) also a real low-down creep - he literally stole copies of the Beaux Jens 45 from one of the members who was in a state of poverty at the time. Promised to repay him, never did. Same deal with a guy who was a member of the Mussies. Bob also created all of those "fake" Soundlab Recording Studios acetates, and passed them off as authentic '60s acetates, along with the bogus Michigan Mixture compilation.

Bob Stricker is deceased. I mostly had OK dealings with him, but did know about the obviously fake acetates, which more than a few people got taken in by (I am not 100% sure he created them, but it seems likely). Over the years I definitely heard some crazy, and somewhat unsavory, stories.

He was a very manic fellow, and was renowned for driving straight across the state of Michigan to a newly-located band member's house as soon as they got off the phone to buy their 45s, even if it meant arriving at an odd (late) hour. He was also a very heavy smoker, and would go to record shows back when such events were not smoke-free with a full carton of cigarettes. His dependence on nicotine was such that he cut off the lids of all the packs with a razor blade in advance, so he wouldn't need to fumble to open the next pack! When he came to my house to trade for the (only known at the time) "Speak Softly to the Wind" 45 I'd found by Kross of the Moon on Wildcat (ca. 1990), I told him he couldn't smoke and I could see his anxiety rising minute by minute as we worked out a deal (for a mint Quests "I'm Tempted" on Fenton). When the deal was done he raced out the door for a cig. Even though that single (an odd rewrite of Bob Seger's "Vagrant Winter" with no guitar break) is still quite rare, I was happy to get the Quests.

I was also at his house once with another hardcore collector, and he showed us his original Keggs (I remember it being pretty clean, perhaps not the VG copy Mike bid on), and he had tons of aquariums going - I recall him saying he was giving up the record game to focus on fish! This was like 20 years ago, and I am not sure when he passed away but I believe it was some time ago.

I like the first Michigan Mixture compilation, haven't managed to find the 2nd one.
What exactly is bogus about it? The "She Devils" credit on Red The Signpost? From what I can tell all the other songs are taken from actual 45's.

The "She Devils" credit on Red The Signpost?

Been ages since I listened to this, but isn't this identical to the Fifty Foot Hose version released by Get Hip (?) in the early 90s as a 45? An earlier version than what later appeared on their album?

I don't have the GH 45, so I can't compare, but I believe you're correct.
However, that's the only bogus thing I can find on this comp. Unless the two Pitche Blende songs are actually taken from their 45 (the track list says "Unrel. Vers.").

I have the Pitch Blende 45, and though I haven't played the comp versions in a while, I remember when I first heard it that there was something different about it, backup vocals or something. Pretty much certain it's a true alternate on there.

Caretakers of Deception (Sanctus) 13 copies found in old distributors stock + a few broken. At least one of the 13 have a crack.

Looks like there is quantity on the Tol Puddle Martyrs on Spiral, coming from the singer. I was third highest bidder on an ebay auction for an unplayed copy where the wording made it sound like a one off. Next day I received a second chance offer which made me smell quantity. I asked the seller, who wouldn't say how many copies there are but replied " he will release 5 copies in total - 3 of these are already going overseas to Germany and Japan And Greece - the winning bidder in NSW"
Reading between the lines it sounds like he has more of these unplayed copies which I suspect will leak out over the coming years. I declined to take one at the price I was prepared to pay when I thought it was a one-off, made a reasonable lower offer but never heard back. It'll be interesting to see if and when any more of these are offered.

Very interesting Michael. I wish people had enough common decency to realise that obtaining an advantage by deception is not a good idea. There is an easy way to handle situations where you have quantity, (especially if it's your own 45), which is to offer a set sale price for all copies. This way it's fair to all buyers, even if it's a high price. Ripping off the first highest bidder, who is probably your biggest fan, is just so dumb. You may get $1000 dollars for the first one, but when collectors worldwide smell a rat, you will find it hard to sell any subsequent copies, having trashed your reputation in the process.

I think greed gets the better of them. I was tempted to take the offer but I knew that two guys had got theirs for less than my price. Next time it comes up I'll bid much lower and hope to be in the top five. The ebay seller is not the singer but seems to be someone close to him who is handling that part of it.
