The Pandas - Walk.

The thing that amazed me about "Walk" was the date -- May, 1966. It sounded to me way too heavy for that time frame (at least for TX -- not the UK) and I had assumed a late '67 or '68 date until I found a contemporary newspaper article.

The band didn't have any copies of the record and I never actually saw a copy in person, though I remember it being for sale a few times for a lot of dough.

The flipside "Girl From New York City" is good too.

I've seen a few copies for sale, and I've owned 2. About 8-10 years ago I scored a stone mint (that's better than m-...) copy on eBay for $100. That was the minimum bid, and no-one else bid, even though it was in the correct category. At least that's my recollection, which is sometimes slightly faulty.

That's obviously not likely to be repeated these days. More like $500-$600 for a copy in that condition I guess. But nowhere near such extinct TX monsters as Four More, Randy Alvey & Green Fuz, Botumles Pit, Sands on Capri, Greg Barr, By Fives...

The May, 1966 release of the Pandas 45 got me to thinking - what could be the earliest "heavy" sounding US released teenaged rock & roll group released 45 on par with "Walk". The only one I can think of right off is "Short Time" by the Noblemen, issued in April, 1966.

Before someone chimes in:
None of the Swamp Rats 45 qualify, as they weren't released til '67.
The Wailers / Sonics, and other ilk based in and around the PNW region, tho down and dirty sounding, don't match the "heavy" guitar tone tag, IMO.

[heavy = the tone created by the distorted fuzz-tone intensity in the riff which propels the given song)

There was only one issue. Rumor has it that the editor lost his mind after repeated tequila binges over many years, and disappeared into the rural areas outside of San Miguel de Allande, Mexico, where he supposedly runs a small petting zoo.
