Here is the long-awaited Orlyn compilation, "The Sky Is Black", which is a 31 track compilation of the best of the Orlyn label. The Bonus Disc rounds out the package and contains the remainder of the Orlyn catalog. All up 55 cuts which represents both sides of the 27 known Orlyn 45s (Ryell's Combo contains 3 tracks).

Only problem is, another Orlyn 45 has recently been discovered - a second Delcords disc making 28 Orlyns. I don't have access to this disc which is of the "one known copy" variety, so the quest for a complete Orlyn compilation goes on!

Meanwhile, you can enjoy 97 percent of the Orlyn catalog right now, by downloading "The Sky Is Black" and "Orlyn Bonus Disc" in FLAC or mp3 format.

This is not a "perfect sound quality" comp like the Fenton "Scream Loud" set. I had near mint copies of all those Fenton 45s. That's simply not the case with the Orlyn discs, (on average 10 times rarer than the Fentons) - a few of these are re-mastered from vg minus or worse condition copies. For example, the Malibus (one or two known copies) had several skips until a previous owner "worked on it" with a sewing needle. Now it only has one skip, and a few dozen loud "whacks" (removed via software). Ryells Combo had literally thousands of audible scratches which I removed by hand. My copy of Lastime Around is best described as "P" condition, and even has chunks of vinyl trimmed off the edges of the disc with a knife or scissors.

Orlyn pressings are variable to begin with, even if the vinyl is near mint, it can be very crackly. All in all, it was a challenge, and I hope the results are at least reasonably satisfying. Sometimes I just left the pops and crackles alone (especially on the Bonus Disc), as removing them would have taken days of work and probably created more problems than it solved.

Choose the MP3 or FLAC folders. "TheSkyIsBlack" contains all the killer material, and "OrlynBonus" contains "the rest", which you may or may not require. All the label scans are available in hi-res, in the "Labelscans" folder.

Right-click on the files (PC) or Control-click (Mac) to download.

Happy Listening!

Enjoying this muchly.... listening to "Wind" currently. Real consistent all the way through it would seem... good good stuff.

And of course Short Time by the NOBLEMEN sits at #1. The most fierce garage track of all time!!!;)

I am giddy with excitement!
Thanks a lot for this, Mark, and also for including me in the secret society.
I applaud the secrecy idea, however, I am pretty sure it will leak out sooner rather than later. I'm not saying you/we shouldn't bother trying, but it's a (sad) fact of life. Anyway, my lips are SS.

Downloading done, now onto the listening part - can't wait, this is so !!

Mark, I could not find the label scans for the Patrick & The Shamrocks 45 - do you think you could upload those as well? Thanks.
I've listened to the first half of The Sky Is Black, and I'm blown away. This is probably the best comp (that never existed) I've heard in years!

Hi Bard
Glad you like it!
I have uploaded the Patrick & the Shamrocks label scans. They failed previously because I had included th "&" character in the filenames.

Patrick later formed Society's Children after the short-lived Patrick & The Shamrocks - that's his group on the Cha Cha label, "Mr. Genie Man". and his MOM is the lead singer on that song! Society's Children had a second 45 come out in 70/71.

There goes the image of buddening hippies trying to emulate the sound of Jefferson Airplane. Those strange "Yeah"'s make more sense now:lol: Fantastic.

The sound on the Noblemen track was so fierce and loud I had to dive for the volume control last night! Fantastic stuff and crispy clear. Unfortunately I only got through 6 tracks before my better half demanded some attention. Christ...I need a day off!

Some great tracks and a lot of variety! The short 'Hanks Big Chance' on the Ryells Combo single reminds me a lot of Jet Black by The Shadows.

Are the Noblemen on the acetate from Detroit at all connected to these Noblemen?

Mark - I've thoroughly enjoyed listening to these rare Orlyn sides in "Bosshoss Sound Inc".
I'm already on my third play and hearing new favourites each and every time. This set is easily the best (non official) release this decade and I hereby request pfft to begin designing one of his great covers for the Orlyn collection.

Many thanks for all of your hard work mastering these sounds and sharing them with us. Top Aussie bloke!!!

thanks, Mark!! Looking forward to listening to this ...it's much appreciated that you took the time to make this happen.

Of the ones I hadn't heard before, Poppies and The Sky is Black was fantastic. Especially the former. Hadn't expected such a moody masterpiece from the title of the song.

The Noblemen on Orlyn were college guys who attended the University Of Chicago. Three of the guys were from out of state. They aren't related to any other group who made a record or cut an acetate / lacquer.

Have only listened to Disc 2 so far (saving the best for later), and am really digging The Corals' 'Love You Baby'. Just the right amount of moodiness for my ears. With 'Red Eye Glasses' on the other side, that's one hell of a great single.

Thank you again, Mark, for sharing these.

I would have included "Love You Baby" on Disc 1, if it had fit. Unfortunately I had to trim it off because I could only squeeze 31 tracks onto Disc 1. But it deserves to be there and is the best track on Disc 2, closely followed by The Paniks "Can't you See".
