The Sky Is Black

Took a while for me to commit this comp to CDR, but I finally did so. All I can say is: The Sky Is Black really needs to be done up right, on vinyl, like Scream Loud!!! - The Fenton Records Story. Listening to these 31 tracks it's obvious why Orlyn is so highly regarded amongst garage fans. Great job with the sound, as usual. Thanks again, Mark!!

Mark AKA Boss.

this has really been the best day ever.... thank you ever so much for making this killer tracks available... I love it so much. thank you ever so much... these tracks are a genuine treat.

Of the ones I hadn't heard before, Poppies and The Sky is Black was fantastic. Especially the former. Hadn't expected such a moody masterpiece from the title of the song.

Poppies was a favourite of mine too.... I may have to rip it off for one of my own new tracks hahaha.... maybe I'll call mine Daisies?
only kidding, but I may steal that bass heavy chord progression idea.

I am totally amazed that someone has unearthed a 'new' Orlyn 45.... it means that there are still endless goodies to be found, how much more is unknown?

Mark exactly how many Orlyn releases were there?? i'm guessing from what you've written I guess it was a discography of 29?

Also are you in contact with the 'new' Orlyn release owner? could they not copy the 45 in high quality to send to you?

Mark I hope you have life insurance on these 45s? seriously these are like the holy grail of 60s garage.

I recently made a compilation for what I considered a pretty hip chick.... I met her, talked about music, gave her a cd.

I included both sides of The Try-Angle 45 (as it is one of my personal faves - if I had money, I'd own it).... so I put these killer tracks on the disc for her.... I didn't even hear from her again?

This is the bane of liking this kinda 60s garage.... I then felt totally like The Sceptres - But I Can Dream inside my head.

I just finished downloading all of the tracks + the label scans, which are nice. I cannot wait to hear these!

I noticed a few that I've been very interested in hearing for a long time!

Thank you very much for this. I really do feel like I just stumbled upon some buried treasure that is to be kept secret.. ;)

Just finished listening to this.... and may I say, EXCELLENT work Mark!

The few Orlyn's that were new to me were absolutely great! The Savoy's killer "Work it Out" was good. "Third Of January" by The Other Half was indeed dreamy. I also enjoyed The Ryells Combo and their ver. of "Only As Long As You Want It". That was neat!

Hearing the flip to "Short Time" was also cool. All in all, a superb project that deserves a loud applause! Great sound quality also! This totally has made my day so far...

Thank you again for sharing this great collection of music. I will keep it private as requested.

I've just finished going through all of these songs.
Mark,
All I can say is WOW!
Your compilation as far as I'm concerned is beyond top notch! ALL of these songs are GREAT!!! You've done a great job presenting them here for us! Quite a feat to find ALL of these rare recordings.
I have a couple of questions:
Where did the name Orlyn originate from?
I wonder why such a small record company had so many label variations....was there any rhyme or reason to the label colours?
Did they press Lp's or only 45's?
Does this compilation cover everything Orlyn ever released/pressed or is this the complete selection "garage" bands?
Why were they so eager to prominently display the fact their records were pressed by RCA? I've not seen info like that on many records.

This has been very interesting!
Thanks again for sharing!
I can't wait to see what the next plateau opens up :)

I can answer your questions

1 - Orlyn - a combination of the owner's first name and his wife

2- Since the label was a custom operation based at Recordings Unlimited in downtown Chicago, they had their releases either mastered and pressed by the RCA custom department, or, when RCA was overworked / busy (plus there was a strike at one point which backed up orders for the major label as well as custom clients), the comapny sought out other pressing comapnies,. namely midwest pressings. Prior to RCA in '65 Orlyn 45s were pressed by Stereo Sonic in Chicago, all on the deep blue label.

3 - custom pressing clients were given the opportunity to choose the label colors, if desired.

4- I have never seen an LP. Only gospel and teen rock & roll/ pop on the 45s

5- Mark is only missing one of the Orlyn 45s. There may be more as yet undiscovered.

6- RCA was the flagship operation of successful record companies in the mid '60s, so why not boast that your records (Orlyn) were pressed by the best of the best?

There is at least one Orlyn LP, it's not garage, though, looked like pretty square country/gospel stuff from what I remember, I believe some one posted a link to an Ebay auction of it on the old forum...

Been listening to this in the car the past few days... over and over and over. This label kills!

Today when I was surfing the net, I stumbled upon something..

I won't divulge any names, but I found a blog that's featuring some of the tracks and label scans from this project.

Would that qualify as 'breaking the rules" - even if it's a song / band that can be taken from let's say, a compilation? You can tell that the label shots and sound clips were taken from this collection, tho!

I ain't tryin' to be a snitch, but those are the rules, right? :%:

No sharing or hosting of any kind?

As soon as this stuff hits any site (including this one) they will be all over the net within days. I guarantee you that a bootleg will be out on vinyl and cd soon and that certain magazines will sing high praises to the label/losers who put them out...:%:

I've read the many discussions on this site regarding bootleggers. And yes, it's an unfortunate case!

The only reason I brought it up really was because the person who this blog belongs to, is someone on HERE who swore by the rules. Again, I won't say any names!

So if I understand correctly, rules can be laid out and the people on this forum will still disobey them? Even after all that "I swear I won't tell anyone / share it" crap? How would these recordings start circulating the net unless someone on here leaked them?

Seems like the bootleggers aren't the only shady folks.
