Did you ever check out the Skip Spence solo LP 'Oar'? Huge fave of mine, from another guy 'breaking down' on record and making it sound beautiful.

Yeah, nice blog. I see Dartmouth, Massachusetts have been mentioned as the Summer Sounds stomping grounds. Don't know if that is correct or not.

Also, I wouldn't worry much about downloading the entire album. The only one benefitting from the release is mr.James Pl*mmer, Radioactive/Fallout/Erebus kingpin. I'd be willing to color my hair green if this is not the case.

Jake Holmes, like the album, but for me it's only Dazed and Lonely that's getting any spins. Go for the Mono if you don't already own it. Jake Holmes himself have said he loathes the stereo version and it was created without his consent and supposedly sounds horrible (never heard the stereo "mix")

My promo copy of the Jake Holmes LP has 'stereo' printed on the sleeve and 'duophonic' on the labels. Duophonic? I always thought it means they set up two mic's and recorded the LP 'live' in REAL stereo rather than doing a 'stereo mix' from a monophonic recording. At least that what it sounds like on my copy. And I do think there are more good songs than Dazed and Lonely, but I agree that they are the best. But then again I can't think of maybe more than 10 LP's from the 60's that doesn't have any duds and fillers.

I picked up a copy of the Summer Sounds LP at a flea market in New Bedford, MA (my home town, and the town just before Dartmouth) and the seller told me they used to play at Chippy's, a popular restaurant/lounge in South Dartmouth. While this in and of itself does not necessarily mean they were actually from Dartmouth, it seems pretty credible to me.

Great flea market find,Mr depravedskippy! ..I had to shell out some dough for a copy that turned up in Haverhill, Mass..I've heard the pressing run was as low as 100 copies..can anyone confirm or deny? One of the top NE garage albums for sure.

Thanks, Paul. Unfortunately it was not a great copy; pretty weak VG overall and was noisy. I wound up flipping it to Zary Smith of the Record Vault for a copy of the Ro-d-ys Earnest Vocation LP. I contented myself with the reissue that was done a few years later. This flea market find took place in the summer of 1990.

I collect heavy on New England stuff.. In the process of of receiving a Rasputin and The Monks after many years of searching! The Capstan Players and The Kings lps are among the couple that are still managing to be elusive.

The New England Scene is most definitely one of my favourites, I rank the sounds coming out of that area as being quite god-like.

You may want to check out 'Stanton Park Records' and see if Arem still has copies of Till The Stroke of Dawn left..It's a fun discography and admirable attempt to do an impossible task. Some information is outdated or incorrect and there have been many additions and some subtractions since it's 1993 publishing date, but it's still a great place to begin.
