The Texas Box

330 tracks on 10 cds. All tracks are in order by label. CD1 starts with the Action label and CD10 ends with the Zip label. The 200 page hardcover book is insane. Plenty of info on each artist and label, including tons of label, artist shots and memorabilia. Each listing also lists how much the record is worth. Another neat feature is, there are lots and lots of Texas label shots of 45s that are not in the box set. These have a small tag next to the 45 photo that are called Missing Links. This helps fill in the blanks for most Texas labels. Most of the Missing Links 45s were left off because they have already been legally released by larger labels, Bear Family etc. I see our very own Westex is name checked in the credits so maybe he can add some info about the box. Next up...Listen to 330 tracks of pure Tejas R&R:yikes: BUY or DIE:boggle:

Got mine today. That was FAST to Australia.

I agree with Joey's mini-review. I should add that the book is the best quality book I have ever seen in a CD box (even better than the Bear Family books). Beautiful hard cover and sturdy perfect binding, quality art paper with superb finish, professional layouts, full rich colour all 200 pages and printing quality worthy of Vogue magazine. The set was obviously put together by fans/collectors. It makes it much better for a collector like me, when the liners are in tune with my way of thinking. Lots of references to garage punk on various labels. Love the market values, takes guts to put that in a CD box set! They even list deadwax for legit and boot issues. Also love the way the set is organised into label order (alphabetical). No phoney "flow" involved, HA!

Reading the credits, I noticed (besides getting Westex's name back-to-front) that the set was produced by Micha Gottschalk. The name rang a bell, and I remembered I bought my copy of the 5 Torquays (pre-Monks) from him about 10 years ago. At the time, I remember he said he didn't want it because he only collected rockabilly. In fact, he said "I am the rockabilly equivalent of you". It didn't mean much to me at the time, but he obviously meant he was a serious rockabilly collector. Good on him for using his collection for such a worthy cause.

I honestly have no idea what I had to do with this.

It's cool that the promo video opens with local combo The Tunemasters. And that book looks INSANE. Easily the finest looking rockabilly 45 related book ever produced.

As tempting as it is, I'll likely not be getting this anytime soon as I'm going through my yearly camping gear phase and would rather spend money on a 14 ounce sleeping pad for a few hundred than 10 cds of Texas rockabilly. Never thought I'd say that… excommunicate me if thy so desire.

I'm not sure what Mark means by back to front in regards to my name… might some kind soul snap a pic of that and send it my way or post it here?

Also thank you to Cook Brandan and Andrew Brown for providing us with words and information from their excellent blogs: "Lonestarstomp", "Westex", and "Wired For Sound".

In other words....HE STOLE YOUR SHIT:twistedevil: Hey...If he's gonna bootleg the music, he might as well bootleg the info too:sneaky:

It's now coming back to me…

I remember an email a year or three back. I told him to grab what he wanted and hit me up on corrections and new info and whatnot.. There is no Westex blog, of course. Maybe he pilfered from my "Diggin' It!!!" and "Country. & Western" blogs.

And thanks for the credit info, MT.

Hey Boss...Let's start a list of rockers off the TEXAS BOX that would fit quite nicely right here on G45. First up...
1. RONNIE MARTIN...Baby You're Mine (Billie Fran 4) 1965

Ok… got the box gratis from the compiler. Weighs a ton and was sent FedEx from Germany. Can't even imagine the cost.

Thoughts….

The prices are neat but some are waaaaaay off base. The Darrell Rhodes discs on Winston and Elroy Dietzel's second Bo-Kay disc jump to mind. One of the Darrell Rhodes discs is a few grand off the mark, but when this set was put together no copies had popped up in a looooong time. Not at auction anyway.

Sound quality is iffy… many Mp3s. Some sourced from mine and AB's blogs as well as others I would guess. Maybe auction sourced as well.

Many of my 'contributions' were straight from my blogs. I wrote some of them informally and left open for future posts. And no editing was done to make them 'book' proper.

The book is cool. If you're gonna go big, then a big ol' hardcover book is the way to go.

The package is cool. The way the Twisters photos on the cd covers come together as one shot is my-tee hep.

It is also nice to have all of these Texas rockers all together in one place. As much as you can have 5 double cds of 330 songs together in one place. I have had something similar in mind for years, but a project of this size was waaaaaay outta my wheelhouse.

Perhaps I doth protest too much. Mayhaps protests would have been lesser had I laid out the scratch for this thing. Or maybe the protests would have been greater. Regardless, it will sell itself I'm sure.

sourced from mp3s sucks for a set like this. Bear Family will not use mp3s, that was made clear to me when I helped with the Vietnam box they did.

If they did use mp3s, I don't believe that many of them were used. It sounds great to fine to me.

4 O'Clock Baby is a top 10 of all-time for me. Super-depressed to see it sell on eBay late last year for more than I paid for my last car.

The Elroy Dietzels I've got. :)

This is right up my alley too… Was super tempted to buy it till I heard that some of the audio was possibly mp3 sourced. This is a huge project to take on, and I respect that a whole lot, but I just wish they had taken that extra step to get their info and sound quality legit.
Still its a really cool release and its probably a good place to get turned on to a ton of super obscure local rockers.
