Unknown Acetate

Do any of the songs on this acteate sound familiar to anyone? Sounds like a pretty seasoned pop group, but the acetate is unmarked. The producer also makes reference to a "Carol Shay Kel Production"...or is that Carole Shea Kel...or Karrol Shay Kel...or Carol Shea Cal? Does that combination of words mean anything to anyone?

It bears at least a superficial resemblance to Sunstone Lollipop, who had at least two but I think three 45s on Kel records out of Oshkosh Wisconsin...don't have either of Gary Meyers' books, they might help.

I've heard one of these tracks before, the "I've got no time to love" track is most certainly released, I've got it on a tape a friend from the mid-west sent me, meaning the Kel Records link must have gravity.

Paul - Could you dig up that CD and see who the artist is? I'd greatly appreciate that.

Im afraid it was a cassette, no track listing available... there is a bunch of stuff on these tapes, I've never ever heard before... so like you, I am at a total loss as to who this artist is, as well as countless others which are on these cassettes... it's a bummer cos these tapes are so so killer.

I have the Sunstone Lollypop 45s - the unissued acetate vocals do not sound like those of Sunstone Lollypop.

I agree that the vocals aren't really a match for the Sunstone Lollipop that I've heard, like the excellent "Never Sad", but I still hear some similarity, plus the Kel connection seemed at least worth mentioning...could be a later version of the band or something.

In the case of Sunstone Lollypop, KEL is an abbreviated form of Kelly, as in Kelly DiCianni. I know of no one else in the Lollypop's sphere named Carroll or Shay (assuming the recordist is following something like a Holland/Dozier/Holland or--since it would be first names--Philles paradigm). The DiCiannis later recordings I know are decidedly less electric. Even if these recordings were contemporary, my gut tells me that announcement would have a noticeable Wisconsin accent.

I thought it could be an English group, too, but the announcer sounds decidely American to me.

I'm not sure the Carrol/Shay/Kel announcement definitely ties the group to Kel Records, but it's a solid lead worth exploring.
