BEACH BOYS Smile cd box on sale for one hour only

And I don't hate the Beatles at all - far from it. But there are other bands I like more. I think the perpetual 'Mojo hype' around'em is as stupid as the hype around Smile(but not nearly as stupid as the hype round Led Zep). It has nothing to do with the actual music.
I used to listen to the Beatles a lot but I've grown tired of hearing them. Just like I'm tired of, say, Jimi Hendrix or CCR. It's not bad music, but I personally don't need to hear them again for a s long as I live.
I don't hate Sgt Pepper - but the notion that it's the greatest LP in history is insane. It's not a very good LP. More or less 50% of it is music hall. Why on earth doesn't Mojo publish huge articles on music hall if it's so great?

This might be an interesting angle to get into them

Thanks for posting this, Axel. I really enjoyed watching those episodes. It's kinda uncanny that Al Jardine doesn't appear to have aged one bit but then again he's always looked way older than his actual age...

I also listened to the snippet of their new recording of "Do it again". I was really bummed out by the heavy use of audiotune on the vocals. I mean, that feels like blasphemy to me. But I guess that's what mainstream music has become these days.

There has obviously been a leak of the whole video. check this out:
DoItAgain

Well, they certainly use autotune, but which modern/mainstream act doesn't? the only complaint i have with this is:
WHY THE FUCK DIDN'T THEY LET GREG CARTWRIGHT PRODUCE THIS??

also: contrary to modern folklore, pet sounds was no flop. US#10 and UK#2 is pret-ty good!

Crap, Autotune is absolute pure evil, what the christ is wrong with everyone? Maybe the Cylons are real! If Ian Tyson, Gordon Lightfoot and Kris Kristofferson (not to mention Chet Baker with half his teeth knocked out) can record without that garbagey processing technology then the damn Beach Boys have no excuse. Grrrr!

So I guess the tour is necessary for them to raise the huge funds necessary to pay the lawyers from all the lawsuits they've filed against each other?

I presume the tour is only happening by dropping the lawsuits (I'm not sure what specific suits there were, probably Mike Love vs someone), they figured it was easier and more fun to make $ that way....no way would I go to see the BB without Carl and Dennis. I've never heard a favorable review of a BB show going back to the mid 70s. And I am a fan, BTW, Of Pet Sounds, before Pet Sounds, and post Smile...

Of course Brian Wilson was totally into competing with the Beatles. .

No doubt. Along with everyone else.

Consider , however, that it has been well documented that Paul, the true revolutionary in the band, was spinning his wheels & kicking his heels attempting (successfully, to my mind) to keep up with BW.

& here:

...at the farmers market, I can hear them say; you're all just pissing in the wind. You
don't know it, but you are....

Nice pics. The last two are ultra-scary. But they get close to the feeling I had when reading BW's autobiography.
By the way, I don't think Brian Wilson was/is mentally ill in any way, as was stated before. He just took too many drugs. He probably didn't take as many as others did, but I guess he's not the type of person who can handle it. (Of course, a lot of others couldn't, too.)
I think it's pretty amazing that he is still alive, after what he consumed in the late 70s. And that he is being so creative. Sorry, but I like the new album with Disney-songs. It's totally Brian, and it sounds pretty much like Beach Boys music.
The sadest thing about it all, is really that his younger brothers passed away so untimely...

And by the way, I don't think that the Beach Boys weren't great when Brian Wilson wasn't in charge. I think they were a really great band. Here the Beach Boys being soulful without Brian:

This is so awful. Not just the autotune, but the drums, everything. Talking bout sterile! THAT is what sterile means in pop music, not Smile.
This is as bad as the worst the Beach Boys did after 1978. And it's the same thing again: trying to sound mainstream. BAD idea!
And the title says it all. No, please, DON'T!

Paul was not a revolutionary. He was just REALLY ambitious.

some odds and ends:

re: autotune. yes, it's awful but we should keep in mind that the beach boys ALWAYS relied on heavy voice processing: reverb, delay, phasing, pitch shifting, even surfing safari is sped up. as someone on the smiley smile board stated, sometimes their voices are so highly processed that they don't sound human anymore. so i don't care if they autotune or not, important to me is, and here i second axel, this track sounds very very boring and sterile.

re: wilson drug use: brian wilson was a heavy drug user especially in the 1970s. all that's left of him is this strange behaving person we see in the video. ginger blake (ex-honeys) says in a documentation something like: the person you see is NOT brian wilson, he's gone.
apart from that, many of his moves are controlled by his wife. i don't know but believe it's her we have to thank (...) for stuff like brian wilson presents smile, lucky old sun, disney, reimagines gershwin et al.
those albums don't sound as HE did care.

re: lawsuits: they are long settled.

Brian Wilson is definately not all there with regard to brain cells.

He was a guest on a BBC chat show recently (maybe 2 months ago) and he could barely speak, the presenter was more or less finishing his sentences.....I doubt very much he can sing a note to save his life anymore.
