Dovers new LP

50 euros for an album with 8 tracks plus 20 euros shipping. Pass. All from master tapes, that's not what I've heard.
 
I recently sent Alec Palao a high school newspaper from 1965 that interviewed Tim Granada and included a photo of him from the Dovers era (unfortunately there isn’t one of the entire band). The article mentions another recording session that probably had unreleased but unknown songs. I’m still holding out hope that Alec eventually does a Dovers release, since he’s interviewed several of the members and has mentioned unreleased recordings by a later incarnation of the band.

The blurb states Mark has “assembled” the master tapes (I’m not even sure what that means). What’s the scoop, Mark?

This just in from Alec Palao.

The claim that this set is from master tapes is inaccurate. The only verified tapes to exist are for just one of the singles, and those are locked away in a corporate vault. Let's see the proof, otherwise this is just another bootleg and the guys or their families are getting ripped off again.
 
I've recieved reply from Massimo, i hope he doesn't mind me sharing this:

"Please let me clear this. The tape we've used were those provided by Mark Taylor who had the best (almost mint - as far as I've been told way back in 2001) copies of the actual Dovers singles. That is the in 90% of the cases the best source to get the nearest and most accurate source of sound once there is no actual master tapes. In case of Miramar no-one has ever confirmed there was anything left from the label that has been acquired by other labels. I am sure Alec knows better than me if there these master actually exists. In 2000 when I spoke to Alec in Rome (he was playing bass with The Chocolate Watchband for my Festival Expo 2000, concerning the making of The Dovers collection he asked me not to release it on CD as he was after bonus tracks and pictures of the band. Eventually in the these 24 years nothing has surfaced and since I had the authorization of the band members I feel it's good to release an upgraded version of out 10" ,but, as promised to Alert not a CD version. This is no speculation on our side otherwise I would have kept releasing the 10" without even bothering noticing the buyers and selling if for the actual price on the market, which I repeat, was due to the foolish bootleg that has been circulating in the past 10 years. I just want to make available a labour of love that involved many real fans of The Dovers in the making and will be appreciated by Garage enthusiast no matter if it comes from the "actual master tapes or not". Technically I must add anyone who works with (baking) the tapes will confirm that in many cases after 60 years if not perfectly stored two channels laster tapes for production might just sound shit due to humidity, heat etc, causing major defeats that can't be fixed. That's why we've decided to operate NOW on theist source available so far. An unless someone has EACH and EVERY DOVERS 45 in MINT condition I don't think it exists a BETTER master than the one we've used. That said excuse if my poor English has caused a misunderstanding, let's just say that this is the BEST SOUNDING Dovers collection of singles that will be available from us, since there is no access to "those are locked away in a corporate vault". I'me ready to take a giant step back and let Alec of whoever else has superior quality material take care of the next reissue. So far I think I've done my part supporting the Dovers legacy in the past decades."

However it comes out, this is essential music - and thanks for posting that fantastic article. The first time I was in Santa Barbara on a family trip with my parents (in 1983), we stayed for one night in the Miramar Hotel. On the day we were going to leave I had an hour to kill so I went to the Salvation Army store. There, in a large pile of unsleeved 45s I found the Dovers' "She's Gone" in vg+ shape - ! I happily paid a quarter for it, along with a few other odds and ends (nothing else so memorable). Then it was back to Michigan on the train...

Thanks for the info. I can confirm that, in addition to The Dovers "I Could Be Happy" master that was leased by Reprise Records, another
Miramar master by The Roadrunners was also leased and released by Reprise:

that's fine and dandy but you oughta go back and change the line TAKEN FROM ORIGINAL TAPES. Us California guys have been looking for those masters for decades, and now we'll still be looking. If Mark mastered this from his 45s, you can bet it's top notch. But you still can't say Taken from Original tapes.

You can master any vinyl 'needle-drop' to tape...and your reissue technically
will be 'tape-sourced'...but it's certainly not from the "original tape" (i.e. the studio's
original first-generation mixdown master). That somehow made me think of what
Sleepy Joe from Scranton recently declared: "We choose truth over facts"...LOL

plus i'm positive Mark didn't transfer the cleaned up 45 dubs to tape. He would have surely sent them Waves or flacs. You're the only guy I know besides me who could link this to Sleepy Joe from Scranton...hahahaha

It means I put the 45s on my turntable and pressed "record".
As for the reissue, Massimo's reply to Hallucalation explains. I didn't do anything since supplying the WAV files in 2001. I was not aware of this reissue until reading this thread.

Shows total lack of effort. At least he could contact you for more recent transfers..
