Forum comp directory

I would be down with another challenge (can it start yesterday?). I like the idea of $300 as a cut off as it allows for a bit of room to play with nicer pieces. $100 is just ten $10 records on ebay. I'd guess $9.99 to be a pretty average starting bid these days.

I´d be onboard as well for this. But I´m gonna cheat and use the last 12 months as fair game also. Otherwise I can not include Eddie Trotter and other wonderful contributions to the modern musical heritage!

But $100 is 400 25 cent records or 100 $1 discs:D. I do not ebay anymore, I do peek and twitch sometimes. Wish I could be a big bidding jet-setter but I will be scuba-diving into piles of junk.

I like the idea of a last year "I got for under" comp to clear the playing field of those "...damn it, I really wanna include this monster..." kind of rule manipulation.

I haven't purchased anything from eBay in a few months either, but it's what non-US folks use. Segment and Colin won't be hitting the flea and grabbing discs on Orlyn for a buck.

Yes, that is part of the problem. But as long as we are honest regarding value, and the fact that I´m soon off to 5 weeks of vacationing in Spain (haha!), being a bit liberal with the time frame before/after the challenge started will only strengthen the contributions. Yes?

Westex, feel like starting a new topic in the main part of the forum where everyone can see it? I´d guess a certain amount of people would have to sign up to make the end result interesting. And what about the format? Download or physical? I still have a soft spot for actually mailing out cd-r´s. Having something to look forward to instead of it all being over in a jiffy.

I would say we do it like the old days and make it a physical mail out. Later on we could do a download if there was a need. Was the old time limit three months? You may include only one song from a record (45, LP, e.p., 78). No reissues or boots. The record has to have been purchased. No trades or gifts. Tax/VAT/shipping doesn't count into the final cost. I don't think genres should matter, though a focused garage effort would better get more votes here of course.

What else?

Would we have enough entrants for it to even be worth it?

Sounds great to me. I'd do a British beat 1964-66 comp. It gives me an excuse to go out and buy some cheap 45s on Pye, Decca, Parlophone and Columbia etc.... nothing rare, just historic.

A clarification to those rules in the small print even though covered in "The Westex Rules" - "The record has to have been purchased. No trades or gifts."

- No price manipulation, like "It cost 500 bucks but I got it for free because it had a warp, crack, etc"... Our although worthy winner of the last "300 buck rock" prize had such an item included and pushed my favoured entrant (45rpm addict) into 2nd place by a nose. It was in my opinion a tainted victory;). What you originally payed was what it cost, no gouging, spitting, biting or scratching.

Last time I think we had half a dozen entrants.

But I believe, even if a new challenge will be hard to pull of, that it would be fun to start a new forum comp era. Some of my all-time favorite compilations have come from earlier incarnations of this forum. Hell, the downloads available to us from Mark today are so good that the fear of becoming jaded is imminent. I vote for the return of the physical component!

Anyone have a good site that can host a forum comp that is free and does not have me fighting to unload a search engine that invariably ends up in my computer for weeks annoying me.

I wanna do a series "Flung, Thrifted and Black" I probably have enough decent cheap rockin' finds (not all garage though) to fill a few volumes for your enjoyment (if you'd enjoy crude but rockin' bluegrass sitting next to 60's garage and R n' B). All coming in at less than $30 dollars spent per volume.

I can hear "Go do a blog" from the assembled multitude....

Does anyone have a track listing for the Sixties Garage Beat comp?

Sounds great! Mediafire is a good option - works for me at least.

You'd have to ask the guy who made the cover. I believe it's Craig D.? Not sure if he's a member here...

I agree, it's a bit annoying when there's a picture of a band that's not on the record, but I guess if it's alright with Tim Warren ...

Whatever became of Masterbeat? Very generous with his time, knowledge and music.

Masterbeat still has a world class record collection & makes remarkable comps with his heavily modified tube gear. Great run of hillbilly, rockabilly, R&B & garage with deep knowledge of labels & the history & locations of tons of obscure records.

We are in contact on a weekly basis, as for why he doesn't post here anymore - he never said & I never asked. A great guy & a good friend.
