I have an idea. This is it...

G45Central could host a garage 45 database system that would have the following features

1 - a searchable list of all known garage 45s taken from collections of members. This would include label information and a label scan, a mathematically calculated G45 rating including Sonic/Rarity/Legend components together with the overall ranking, and possibly a sound file.

2 - each forum member would have a GBase ID number. This number would be secret unless revealed by the member himself/herself.

3 - members could log into the GBase system and add information such as label scans, band photos, general information, reviews, ratings etc.

4 - members could mark each record as "own" or "want", and possibly "trade". The only marking seen on each 45 in the GBase system would be the total number of "own", "want" and "trade" copies. Offers could be included for "wants", and a dollar value for the "trade". The values would be displayed, but not connected to any particular user ID.

5 - with your ID and login password, you would be able to view a filtered database showing just the 45s you "own" or "want".

6 - Members and non-members could access the database, view the information and offer records for sale by clicking a button and adding some info such as condition of the disc and price. No further description would be necessary since it would already be there in the GBase. The seller would see how many people wanted the record, but not the identities. An automatic email would go out to everyone who marked the record as "want". It's up to the potential buyer if they reply to the seller or not. A trade request email could also be automatically sent to members who have marked 45s as "trade", by clicking the appropriate button, again without revealing the member's identity.

Any thoughts?

It sounds like the best parts of wikipedia and discogs rolled into one. I very much like the idea. It would make G45 an even greater place. Surely there would be an option for a little text, right? To note existing boots/repros and how to identify them. Chris has started to gather the necessary info on garagehangover.

If it's possible to program it to work that way it would be great . It could incorporate those few 45's that didn't make it into TBM . Also creating an inventory of your 45's by clicking on the "own" button is much easier than putting all the necessary information in a personal database . The buy and trade option sounds complicated to work out , but would be really nice to have !

first "garage" should be defined ;)
US rds only?

It's the stuff we zoom in on....

Seriously, as you know...I am of the opinion that the definition of "garage" belongs to whoever is prepared to argue the case. Which means, whoever cares most. It's not a hard and fast definition. Not only does it change over time, but it has a different meaning for every individual. This is also true for another genre which was invented retrospectively by fans..."Northern Soul".

The best way to handle the definition problem, is to throw it open to the members of this board. We could have a setup where any forum member would be allowed to create a 45 entry in the GBase. But a veto system could be incorporated, where the 45 could be deleted if 3 forum members declared it to be "not garage-y enough". Maybe it wouldn't be deleted, just flagged as non-garage and filtered out of the main listing.

And it should definitely be worldwide, incorporating a wide range of 60s garage and non-blatantly bearded hippy psych, and also the harder edge of garage-y beat.

Add two fields to the personal area of the database for condition, and price range!

Nice to know you are still certifiably insane, BossHoss!

I'm willing to contribute. I'm not a 45 collector but can add a ton of photos and band info. I'd also add info on the unreleased acetates I own. But who would even attempt to create a workable shell for the site?

I guess this will be great.

Ratings? Great!
SOUNDFILES to every song would be great.. btw missing Steve Carpenter's Am I Lost... I didn't have a copy could anyone upload it on Youtube? Please?

That has to be the single most ambitious idea I've heard of on this or any other forum. It's a very impressive concept, but is it feasible to think it could be accomplished? Especially the buy, trade, concept.

A very good idea. I already have soundfiles and scans of the records of my little collection, so is easy to me to contribute with this.

I think this is the logical step to go after 'Teenbeat Mayhem'...a viewable database for 60s garage/psych fans/collectors..... with label scans/group pics all in one place.
Something to be around for decades to come.

Fab idea. Discogs gives me a headache, I would love an alternate universe devoted only to the sounds I love instead. Would also be great to document all label variations known for each 45, under the same entry. Like they do over on www.45cat.com & set a standard for how the scans should look.

Just looked at Discogs. I have never seen Discogs before, or even heard of it. Looking at it, It really is kind of like what I had in mind, except it's massive and general, and not very attractively presented. Still, I'm surprised that my weird idea is already so well established elsewhere.

Mark -

Great series of ideas, & what a huge task to take on. An upgrading on G1000 & sound clips would be wonderful, my opinion is they are of primary attention. The desire to share info on this forum speaks for itself, the designation of rank is important but the ability for more people to hear these great records is where it all stems from. A major step forward ...
