Happy Snaps

This wraps up the letter "M". Thank god for that, I hear you say. Or maybe I should continue and add all the Merseybeats, Mindbenders, Mojos, Merseys, Monkees, McCoys, Millennium, Mojo Men, Music Explosion, Manfred Mann, Magicians... but don't worry, even I don't have the stomach for that.

Mark , did you see the Chosen Few/Mystic Tide acetate that was offered in the FB 60's Punk group ? It's been hanging there for a couple of days , this is what the seller had to say about it :

This is a one of a kind 10” acetate, The acetate includes 4 cuts. 3 cuts of Stay Away and 1 cut of Why. 4 tracks in total. On side 1 you have a in studio demo take of 1. Stay Away (1:17), and 2. Stay Away (2:18). Side 2 features another alternate take of 1. Stay Away (1:35) and 2. Why (2:01)

The demo cuts of Stay Away feature differing chords and instrumentation

Thanks for posting re the Chosen Few acetate, Christian. A couple of years ago I would have been interested, but these days I'm not going after acetates with the same enthusiasm as before. The deterioration aspect vs. the cost does worry me more than it used to. I like to play my 45s in the kitchen on a portable player (as well as on my main system). I wouldn't dare play acetates on the portable player. Plus, once the acetate is released on a comp, the value of the acetate plummets. I have contributed all my acetates to various comps always for zero compensation. Now that I'm retired, I have to consider mundane matters such as value for money, haha!

What is really weird about this acetate is why anyone was bothered to press multiply takes on vinyl. It was always that the best take/perfomance would go on acetate and not "take 1/take 2" etc.

If the acetate was made by the studio and given to the band, maybe the idea was to listen at home and choose the best take to release.

Yep , the deterioration aspect was what always kept me away , plus the fact that they can be faked so easily if you have some vintage blanks . Oh , and I hope you're not playing your records on one of those "Big Bird - Sesame Street" portable players :hihi:
It's a pretty cheap player (from Aldi!), but it's considerably better than the usual cheap portable. If I ever came across an excellent portable player, I would buy it. But I haven't seen one yet.

This one seems to be decent. The only one I've found where you can put a decent stylus on, and has got adjustable counter weight.

Thank you Sebastian. That seems exactly what I am looking for. I'm not sure if it's actually available yet, or it it will work on 230v here. However I have written to ask for details. Looks great! I'll let you know what happens.

And it even has a "scratch" mode, for when I go live DJ-ing with my Keggs 45. :scared:

Instead of continuing random Happy Snaps, I have started on a systematic a-z project of label photos, using my iPhone. The picture quality is excellent, and I'm doing both sides of each 45. Instead of posting them here on the open forum, I'm going to load them into a private G45Central bunker, and any member who is interested can contact me and will be given the download key. I'm uploading them as I go. If someone would take on the job of downloading, re-naming and uploading the photos with the artist and song title, it will make the job twice as fast. It would require the use of FTP to upload. I will provide the instructions necessary to set up FTP. If no-one volunteers, I'll do it myself.

I have already done over 1,000 shots, and when finished (hopefully within a couple of months) there should be around 17,000 photos. Quality is shown below. Much better than the usual crappy blurry scan you get on Discogs. It's very good (for a photo), but would not be sufficient quality to make an exact repro because they are photos, not scans, and have uneven lighting across the label. It should be an excellent resource for collectors and anyone who wants to check label details without going blind.

Thanks for the offer Daniel, I'll be in touch. It's worth noting that I only have maybe two thirds of the records listed in TBM. And half of those, I wouldn't have known existed without Mike's research. Also your database of course!
