Happy Snaps

The older I get, the more different music styles I like. I remember these Action sides, I didn't like them 10 years ago. Now I do like them, very much. Either my standards are slipping, or my mind is expanding. I hope it's the latter. In general I like Mod sounds better than I used to. A few well-placed horns is not the deal-breaker it used to be for me. Within limits of course. Maybe it's because I now realise that there will never be any more '60s style/quality music, no matter how long I wait. It just isn't going to happen. The actual art of sound recording has been lost since the advent of digital recording, apart from anything else.

is there more than 1 copy of Purple Virus? Besides Crocker's copy, are there any other red label Denise 45s out there?
There are 2 copies of the Purple Virus, at least. At least that's what you told me at the time. I think a band member has the other copy. But that's a long time ago, and I could easily imagine another copy being out there by now. Do I have your permission yet to display the label?:lol:

I have always assumed that Barry might have a red label Denise. Not sure though. Whose copy was used for the re-issue?

Turns out the guy Karl got the purple virus record from was a friend of the band but was not in the band. Now I remember that he said he might have had another copy. How do you remember this shit? Alec got Denise to go to Crocker's house and he recorded his red label Denise 45 on to a cassette off his Nakamichi deck and that's what Ace used. Denise had to beg him to do it...

Sure, who knows when Alec will ever put it out. I talked to one guy in the band and he emailed me pics of the band that I posted on G45 but he doesn't have a copy. 1 guy is missing, I think one guy is dead and one guy doesn't respond to messages.

Well the first Action song shown is a killer, not sure about the rest.

There are 3 ultra rare 45s I don't have that I would really like to have. James Bond & The Agents "Wild Angel", Peabody Hermitage "Fear" and The Sands "Open Your Eyes". There are others of course, but those are the three I miss most.

I was expecting "Open your eyes" to be a cover of the Avengers' song, instead it turned out to be a cover of "Pushing too hard"!

If you're ready for a challenge...
The tuffest challenge in all of '60s garage collecting, is the Back From The Grave Volume 10 challenge. That is, to collect every 45 on that mindbending comp. Every single one of the 45s on volume 10 is ungodly rare, and horrendously expensive if they ever come up for sale. 3 of them are acetates, which implies one known copy. Even if you exclude the acetates, hunting down the 11 vinyl 45s will reduce you to a floundering mental wreck, should you ever be foolish enough to take up the challenge. I got to 9 (8 if you don't count the acetate), before I went insane and never recovered.

This Hard Times 45 is ultra rare. At one time it was supposed to be the only known copy, but I'm sure there's a couple of others now, although I don't know who owns it besides me (Barry might). Anyway, it's one of the rarest BFTG 45s out there.

that is a thing of beauty. I interviewed one of the guys about 17 years ago. He didn't have any, tapes, 45s or pictures and very few memories of the band.

Yes it is a killer. I played all of them before posting the photo. If I didn't at least "like" them, I wouldn't have included them, but I did quite like all of them. Mostly (totally?) produced by George Martin.

Dislike the Action, always found them to be so over-rated, except for "Wasn't It You". "Harlem Shuffle" is a decent mover.
Those other pictured 45s? Tepid renditions, all. No thanks:flush:

I only know of the copy Brent S had, which you ended up with somehow. It can safely hoist the 1 known copy flag.

There are 2 Just Too Much 45s, the other one is G+, not sure who has it now.
As discussed years aback on G45, I contacted every member of that group, their roadie, and the producers (one living, one now deceased) =
ZILCH.

I think Greg Barr & the Barr Association is a one known copy deal as well. Don Julio had the one before offloading to the bunker in exchange for a lifetime supply of fermented grapes in various bottles.

By Mark putting up the scan of the Purple Virus 45 it got me to dig out my notes and I called Mike Dwyer again and actually got through this time. He lives about 60 miles from me. He was at work and kind of busy but he said I could interview him tomorrow at 10 am. I interviewed Bill McWood a few years ago and he sent those band pics to me. Sorry guys, no rekkids. All Mike has is a scan of the labels! Hopefully he can tell me who Cohn & Donig (D & C) are.
