Hey kids! Collect The Whole Set!

I believe that ALCO used two (or more) different pressing plants, Monarch for styrene, and possibly Allied (or ARDCO) for vinyl. I was told by someone that they wanted a record pressed through either ALCO or Monarch, and was quoted a lower price for styrene compared to vinyl, so they chose styrene. All these operations were within a few blocks from each other and possibly moved jobs around to meet demand.

All the Dovers 45s I've seen were vinyl. Most copies of the killer 1st 45 She's Gone / What Am I Gonna Do seem to play with a little (or more) hiss.

Interesting, so when we've got Delta numbers in a vinyl press, we shouldn't call it a Monarch!

Plundering onward through the USA. Here is a selection of Laurie 45s, shown fully clad due to their snazzy, finger-poppin' company sleeves. Most of the label sets shown from now on may have significant omissions, as they are not ones that I have particularly hunted down. Although most Laurie 45s are not rare at all, they are mostly pretty great, and at least one of them (The Tropics) is very rare as well.
I'd like to know what's missing...(probably quite a few)

Laurie.jpg

The Newports - The Trouble Is You / I Want You may be the biggest omission.

also:

The Sixth Day Creation - Cherry Pie
The Muffets - Lost - Like some Laurie releases it was picked up from a local label.

Would there be any chance the Shapes of Things (also released as the Petrified Forest) was a UK production? It sounds like one.

Noticed "Leaving Me" by the Royal Guardsmen is not pictured in the array. It was the B side of their first single that promoted the wistful Young Rascals remake, "Baby, Let's Wait". Laurie re-released "Baby Let's Wait" in 1968 but the only way to get "Leaving Me" is to find the 1966 pressing. It is very difficult to find, seems only promotional copies were pressed. Scores a 5.6 in TBM. Another Royal Guardsmen tune is under-appreciated, "Magic Window" from 1969 (scores 4.0)

"It Takes All Kinds" by the Central Nervous System scores 5.1 in TBM, Newports "The Trouble Is You" scores 4.8

Whether Bureau is a pretty good 2-sider, "White And Frosty" / "Why Can't You And I"i like it more than the TBM cabinet did (3.5 / 3.7)

Heavy Breathing released 2 45s on Laurie, both are very hard to come across despite being on a major label, although only one tune is TBM-worthy, "I Been There" (4.4)

The Shapes Of Things release is a Warren Schatz related production, all of his efforts are NY / NJ based performers.

Maybe Laurie had an excess of Broadway address sleeves that they needed to get rid of (or they kept two offices), but I'm pretty sure they'd moved operations to W. 45th by 1963. To be period correct, the sleeves should all have the 35 W 45th St. address. :sonny::screwy:

Really digging the US major label talk. Super useful. Thanks guys!

That's at least 10 Lauries missing, and there are others. I think I have 25. So there must be around 40 in total, with a pretty high overall standard. Ill post another major label set soon. I wonder which US major label will be declared the fairest of them all? That could be worked out by adding up the total TBM scores for all the 45s on each major label.

I would think RCA-Victor / RCA just for the sheer number of higher-rated sides. Columbia would be 2nd.

One thing I started to compile was to discover which group / performer had the highest TBM average of top-notch songs (A+B side). I took groups / performers with three or more 45rpm / acetate-only releases.

Yeah, I'd love to see some majorlabelstuff too and really appreciate the Lauries, as Im obsessed with the label as such. One missing that I like is The Castels - Rocky Ridges, a light psychedelic ballad with flute and reverbed guitar. Another is British Roadrunners - Do Something To Me, which has an interesting b-side Flower Movement, kind of a fast refried HeyJoe. Theres also some more bubblegummy releases like Waterproof Tinkertoy, Gap (Sheriff), Jimmy Curtiss and the danish Lost & Found.

I cant think of think of too many garagey ones on RCA except The Others (!?), but would love to see some Columbia. Atco gotta be up there too.

Not Quadrangle for RCA (it was Philips) but also Blue Things, Mark Markham & Jesters,
Others, Stained Glass, Liverpool five, King Bees, Traveing Salesmen, Sidekicks, Denny Belline & Rich Kids, Living Legends, Id, Ed Wool & Nomads, Chris Gantry, Peter Robbins, Sages (UK), Jaybees (Canada), 49th Parallel (Canada) Checkerlads (Canada), Equals (UK) Rokes (UK)...

More RCAs (not all of these are in (B)TBM, just records of interest for obscure 60s pop/rock)
Cicadas (AUS) AFAIK their only US release
Jack E Lee and Squires
Tony Conigliaro
Miki Dallon
Don Ray
John Hartford - Category Stomp
Lloyd and Village Squires (CDN) Canada only release although it uses the US numbering system, I've been looking 20 years for a US copy
African Beavers (garage soul)
Steve Blood
King George (garage soul mod)
Jefferson Airplane
Big Buddy Kaye
Small Faces (UK)
Youngbloods
Johnny Fever
Trade Martin
Muffins
Collection
Autosalvage
Family Tree
Nilsson

There's ones I don't remember what the sound like - Subterranean Monestary, Diamond Four, Aerial Landscape

Here's a selection of Parlophone UK 45s in memory of George Martin. to be precise, they are mostly UK with a few Aussie and Euro picture sleeves thrown in. Quite a few missing, but I'm not strong enough on UK labels to know what they are.

George Martin did not produce everything shown here, but as boss of Parlophone, he would have had some kind of interest in every one of them. "Ray Cathode" is actually George Martin himself (together with the Dr. Who sound effects producer), which he released under a pseudonym around the same time he first auditioned The Beatles.
