Hey kids! Collect The Whole Set!

Here's a copy of Mark Prellberg's Free Flight, Dove Recording Studio 2LP compilation. To the left is an acetate LP containing 6 cuts by The Magpies, including their best cut featured on Free Flight, "Never See Her Again". There are 5 other Magpies tunes from the same session, all unreleased. "Everybody's Fool" is not on the LP acetate, but was the flip side of a different 7" acetate of "Never See Her Again".

Top centre is the legendary acetate "He's In Love With Himself" / "I Just Don't Know". When Free Flight was released, the identity of the group was listed as "unknown artist" due to the absence of labels on the acetate. The group has recently been confirmed as The System, see link below.

At top right is the Calico Wall's "I'm A Living Sickness" Dove acetate which was also never released in the '60s, but has been compiled several times since, including on 45.

The New Victors-Gloria:Dove Acetate.jpeg Here's a Dove acetate that includes The (New) Victors version of "Gloria" b/w "Little Girl." Band had bassist Jim Kane and singer Denny Waite pre-Litter and I included "Gloria" on the Victors-Victorious CD (Arf Arf AA-099) while the flip remains unissued (Note: I used a different studio version of "Little Girl" on the CD).

The Victors (now going under the moniker The New Victors) booked an hour at Dove and recorded both songs. However while breaking down their gear, they listened to the recording ONLY to discover that Denny messed up the spelling in the refrains ... singing "G-L-O-R-R-A" throughout. The band used up their budget so never released this version due to his obvious screw-up. They modeled their version after Them, so could have beat SoK to the punch! Oh well, and the rest is history...

IMG_1651.jpg Here's the entire IGL 100-155 set from 1965 - 1968. After that, there are a couple of OK discs (Fowl, Meloncolony, etc) but this was the Golden Era for their releases. The only one that I'm missing is 125 (Jim Godfrey & The Wildcats) but it's a C/W ditty. The label was based out of their studio in downtown Spencer IA and I've actually visited inside the building in the '90s (although the studio was long gone).

On the left is Dee Jay & The Runaways-Jenny Jenny/Bonie Maronie [IGL 100] done in a minuscule pressing of only 100 45s. And to the right is the only non-red label single by Dynamic Dischords-Passageway (To Your Heart)/This Girl Of Mine [IGL-150]. I also put on top the Castels art sleeve [IGL-107].

Of note is Terry Klein-Keep On Running [132] which is on their Sonic imprint. Ironically this single was booted from the IGL vinyl and released on Terry Lee's suspicious Stone label [Stone 45] out of Pittsburgh since the flip was a doowoppy local hit there. Also there are three other singles during this "Golden" era on Sonic: Runaways Curt Powell's solo 45 [138], the Canoise's second 45 [141], and the Runaways final 45 [148] . There are many IGL and Sonic singles post-155 era and the studio closed its doors in the early '80s.

IGL co-owner John Senn (and the "Jay" in the Runaways moniker) once told me that the Sonic imprint was for their "premium" records, which of course doesn't have any relevance to us garage guys.

I hadn't heard the highlights of the IGL label in a while, and was pleasantly surprised at the musical quality of the label when I recently spun the IGL Rock Story CDs that I put out in 1994 on two Arf Arf volumes. There is definitely a sound, and the studio excelled in Midwest folk rock along with the occasional punker like Tommy Tucker's classic "Don't Tell Me Lies."

Luv that IGL sound, the Roof Garden Jamboree 2-CD set contains many cool unissued trax that are also big faves of mine.
I do like / own one IGL label disc from 1976, but that's me :hihi:

I hear you Mike. Stumbling upon those 55 tracks that comprise the Roof Garden Dance Jamboree 2-CD set on the IGL studio wall was unearthing a major audio jewel. All of the songs were previously unreleased except the 2 cuts by the Bird Dogs who were the winners that year's competition. And to think that all of those bands recorded 1 or 2 of their best songs, and then the tapes were stored away in perpetuity once the judges picked a winner based on the recordings. Glad I discovered those tapes for all of posterity to dig!

Here's the last of the big Aussie sets, Festival. The blue labels are the earlier ones, and in general they are by far superior. The yellow labels are from the late '60s and while some are good (Hugo is excellent) some are psych verging on heavy psych (Bucket, James Taylor Move). There are plenty of others on yellow label Festival too foul to be shown here.

What! Hugo (deservedly) gets a special mention, but not Robbie Peters? I rate his second yellow Festival release a 9/10.

Jeannie Jim Tom & Bill were from Tucson, Arizona? Is that correct?
The 45 label has no info at all, no label name or anything. I would guess a Minnesota provenance was guessed because it was pressed there or something?

Mistaken for a Minnesota group probably because it was custom pressed by Kay Bank in Minneapolis.
They came from Chicago which I mentioned eons ago, yet the group is placed in North Carolina(!) in TBM.

That's fantastic! The copies look very nice, must have a single source I would guess (ex band member?). And it's a monster record as well. Well done Chris.

Here's my collection of records by Singapore band The Cliffters. They played pretty cool Malay garage. However, the June Abdullah record is more like soul music and has brass instruments as well. It's still pretty good. There are a few more records by the band that I haven't got

Cliffters .jpg

A related band was the Fabian Boys, which included Alistini Badjuree from The Cliffters. They also had more records, and all of them are good that I have heard

Fabian Boys.jpg

I also have a later recording by Cliffters' singer Rickieno Badjuree with another group. I cannot recommend this one. The sitar is just a prop and the music not so exciting rock-pop sort of stuff

Just a threesome, I guess that's OK for a Saturday night, (so is fighting) ;)

A fave 45....

When in Italy try to find the missing Prune;)

Was also going to post on bands that have Dave Hassinger as producer/engineer in common but that would have taken up too many hours of scanning/photographing. He was a busy bee....
