Hey kids! Collect The Whole Set!

Perth based Clarion records were a very patchy affair. I actually had trouble scraping together a decent display of their wares, considering they had over 75 releases on 45rpm, in the mid-to-late '60s. However many of them are quite dull and wimpy. There are a few exceptions, though. There's another good article from the folks at Milesago here :

I'm not a huge fan of the Valentines but She Said is a neat pop number. The most fascinating Birds track is 'Dust in my Pants' comped way back on Ugly Things vol. 2 I believe.

"Dust In My Pants", it's the flip of "Magic Words". I like it a lot mainly for the vocals which sound like Joey Levine but felt it might be too weird and bubblegummy for most here. Certainly a surprise that it was chosen for Ugly Things. Valentines, I have it but didn't think it fit.

Instead of clicking "Like" through all 22 pages I hereby give two thumbs up to every single post in this thread! Amazing!!
Oh, the missing HMV has to be Rum Drunk.

Robert Helpmann's Surfer Doll? Soundells and the Brothers Grimms are missing but I'm not sure they qualify (either)

HMV weighs in with some heavyweight garage killers. There is one great and rare one missing from the lineup, but I'm not saying which one...you pick it!
Why no Soundelles, Mark? My records show four copies sold on ebay over the past six years, average price $150.

I "declared" on collecting Australian 45s about 10 years ago. At that time I was unaware of the Soundelles and one or two others (Wee Liz). Once I declare a country complete, I don't bother trying to find missed ones, stragglers or ones that show up out of the blue. It's kind of a rule I have, to stop myself getting trapped in a never ending cycle of need and acquisition. I reached my goal, and reward myself by retiring and enjoying what I have. There's always another country, another challenge.

Less exciting is the New Zealand HMV lineup. I'm not even sure how complete this is, as my NZ collecting technique was very hit and miss. Many of the songs are covers, an exception being the Avengers psych tune which was a hit in NZ. It was written by Chris Malcolm who later moved to Aus, teamed up with the Altlantics and released a rare and sought after psych 45 on Ramrod.

Parlophone, obviously the home of the Beatles in the UK, and the Easybeats in Australia was owned by UK company EMI, as was Columbia in Australia and HMV. As regards this Australian 45 lineup, there are so many two-siders that I coudn't resist flipping some of the discs over to show what lies beneath...

(Larry's Rebels and Max Merritt were New Zealand groups, released by Parlophone in Australia)

Columbia in Australia was a completely different company from the US brand. The Australian Columbia was part of the EMI group, which caused problems for record importers (like me) in the late '70s, because we weren't allowed to bring US Columbia records into the country without blacking out the word "Columbia" all over the LP sleeve and the labels.

How about Peter Nelson - Down in the Mine? Also maybe too late in style is the Top Shelf, which is a great psychedelic single.

Next up - some good stuff on RCA, some surf instros for padding, and some weird ones. I've included a couple of weird ones, notably the Grape Escape which is not garage, but more like Captain Beefheart or something. The Smoke "No More Now" is a New Zealand RCA pressing. Once again there is a cool and rare two-sider which escaped my clutches.

Also on display is the ultra rare promo version of The Creatures "Ugly Thing", just to show that it does exist. As if anyone cares...

Midnighters - Hoochy Koochy Man / Betty Lou? I also like the Kevin McCann 7" and the Twiliters - Bottle Of Wine (even if it is a folk band cutting loose)
