How Unknown Can You Go?

I'm sorry Stampy and Outside_Lookin_In, but I have received too many complaints about the rule change (some via private message). We will have to stick with the original rules which means no substitutions.

Also, although it's part of the fun to guess the ID of a track, a song is not ID'd by a correct guess, it has to be heard before.

#6 is by a well known band...but recorded under a different name).

I've shared some of these with forum members, so if I have please don't spill the beans. All songs are by U.S. groups and come from acetates.

Bonus by one of the above groups (second acetate side)"

Damn...cut this off right before the scream.

I give a 5 to all of these.

huh? That's not how it works, if you know a song you should ID it, although you can still rate it, it's just that the rating wouldn't count. Remember we are on the honor system here.

What you just wrote doesn't make sense, Joey:lol:. Why can't you rate a song and ID it as well?

The way I understand the rules, is that you should ID a track if you've heard it before. No if's or but's. That includes playing the tracks for other members on previous occasions, unfortunately. Otherwise, I could post all the songs I put out on links and forum CDs over the years, for example. And Moptopmike could wipe the floor with all of us.

It's actually really hard to come up with stuff that nobody has ever heard. Which is where the challenge lies.

Anyway don't worry about the rules too much. They can be bent slightly, it's supposed to be fun.

Got it. If somebody can ID a song that I've previously shared...please go ahead. Rules are rules.

Instead of getting all mixed up with an explanation, I'll give an example taken from the actual scoreboard for outside_lookin'_in :

4 - "ENTRY NO. 4"
http://clyp.it/qu3jgdiv?token=e88448ccafd767621f7dae329badb361
hicksville hogwash - 8
don julio - 7
frantic - 7
greenfuzz - 6
bosshoss - 7
laurent bigot - 7 ID
pfft - ID
axel - 5
mr. splendid - 5

8+7+7+6+7+7+5+5 = 52 points (including 7 from laurent bigot who rated and also ID'd the track, but nothing from pfft because he did not rate the track even though he ID'd it).

8 people rated the track, so the average score = 52/8 = 6.5

2 people ID'd the track, so according to the yellow table (see below), the score is multiplied by 25.
So the final score for "ENTRY NO. 4" is :

6.5 x 25 =
162.5 points.

Only 5 members have heard the tune before - 5 points
Only 4 members have heard the tune before - 10 points
Only 3 members have heard the tune before - 15 points
Only 2 members have heard the tune before - 25 points
Only 1 member has heard the tune before - 50 points
No-one has ever heard the tune before - 100 points

So even though most people did not rate the track that they ID'd for other members, they should have because even though they got ID'd they still would have gotten some points for rating it? If that's how it is you sure never made that clear because everyone would have rated the songs that they ID'd. I don't even have a problem with your math or clarification, it just this thing keeps changing.

You can ID a track and rate it, but it's not compulsory of course. That's always been the case as far as I'm concerned. When did I (or anyone) ever say you can't rate a song if you ID it? It hasn't changed. :nope:

People are not forced to send in ratings, they do it if they want to.

I don't care either way, I just think people misunderstood the rules when they didn't rate their ID'd tracks. (I did) A guy like OUTSIDE LOOKIN IN who is in the running who has around 3 unrated ID'd tracks should be able to get his ID'd tracks rated so it would give him more points. And not just him, there are others who have unrated tracks too. Hey, I'd like to win this things as much as the next guy but the rules should apply for everyone. So by your clarification I think everyone who ID'd a song should be able to go back and rate their ID's so those members can score more points. I don't have any ID's so it won't effect me either way, I'm just looking out for other members. :)

Yes, but remember that more ratings does not mean a higher score. It's only the average score that counts. One single rating of 8 is better than 5 ratings of 8 and one rating of 7.

But if a guy like OUTSIDE LOOKIN IN has a 3 good songs that 3 people ID'd and didn't add a rating to the ID, he would suffer from no ratings on his ID'd tracks. Right?

No it doesn't really work that way. As long as he has good average ratings from the people who didn't ID the track, he would not be worse off.

By all means, anyone who ID'd a track but did not send in a rating for whatever reason, is encouraged to send in the rating any time before the end of the contest.
