How Unknown Can You Go?

Great fun, guys. I'm easily resigned to "all the good stuff has been found, there's nothing new under the sun" pessimism, so hearing 100 completely un-comped and mostly unknown songs was a revelation.

Joey, Outside Looking In, Bosshoss, and Greenfuzz all brought the goods in spades with some fantastic sounds. Thanks for sharing, everyone.

As for who the bands really were ...

"I Was Among Them" (not the actual title) - The Xcentrix.

"Need Your Love" is by the Junks, an acetate I had and sold on eBay a long time ago. It's listed in TBM.
No idea who these guys were.

"Why Don't You Realize" and "Time Will Prove Them Wrong" are by the Warlocks, the same group that did "If You Really Want Me Stay" and "Life's A Misery." These appear to be unfinished demos, auditioning the songs, not intended for release.

"Get With the Tempo" is unknown. I long thought it was Neal Ford and the Fanatics with a different singer, but the band said no. I still have my doubts. It's definitely a Houston, Tx group.

"Lost In Life's Race" (not the actual title) is by the Matchbox. The complete version will probably be on a forthcoming Ace comp.

Yeah, congratulations Joey. I was never in any doubt you were heading for #1, with Green Fuzz being a clear second (by my tastes, anyway). Your #6 was also the best song in the contest in my books. Sorry about your loss, and hope you find your feet soon.

I'll second what you said about Mark. His enthusiasm, knowledge, and generosity are unparalleled.

Congrats to the winners. This was fun for the most part!

And in case anyone's wondering about my submissions...

(Sadly this record is not mine, have to credit Scott Cheesebrew for the audio.)

My dad worked for the Wisc. Electric Power Compnay in Sussex for many years. Cool.

Congratulations, Frantic - well-deserved!

Here's my contribution (on Atco, no less):

my submissions:

#1: "All I Want" an early version of the Page Boys under a different band name. Exists on tape only. Lacks the fuzz of the Ruff 45 but this version has really grown on me. Thanks to Tom from the band for this one.

#2: "People You and Me" by Euphoria, who had the LP on Capitol and the 45 on Mainstream. This was one of their unreleased Houston recordings. Patrick Lundborg sent me this clip when I was corresponding to him about the band. He said only 3 other people had ever heard this track. I worried this recording could be lost, which is why I posted it. I'm happy to hear that Don Julio was the source of the clip and that these recordings will be issued in full.

#3: "The Kind of Girl" by the Sensations of Dallas, Texas (http://www.garagehangover.com/sensations/). To my ears the best of three unreleased original songs recorded by the band.

#4 and #6: "Little By Little" / "Have Faith": two sides of an unreleased Audiodisc acetate with no info written on it, possibly from the NY area. Whoever this was will probably never be found out.

#5: "The Fall" Mirasound 45 acetate with "for Soupy" written on the label. "Brute Force" is also written on the label but crossed out. I emailed Mr. Friedland asking if this was his recording but he didn't say yes or no. Obviously a NY studio production, but the parody lyrics and the way the vocalist goes apeshit at the end make this one I don't get tired of hearing. Thanks to MK for this one.

I posted all of these as clips so they couldn't be bootlegged. If anyone is interested in doing a legit release of the Sensations or the Page Boys, I'd be happy to contact the band for you.

stonehenge.jpg The name of this song is "Satan's Voice" recorded by "Stonehenge" (Tides In + bass player) at Richcraft Recording Company in Brooklyn, NY on January 18, 1969. I have the original tape. There were 3-4 10" vinyl copies made.

Here are the identities of all my posts :

DickCharles.jpg

1 - "Catch You On The Run" is from a Dick Charles acetate, one-sided LP by an unknown mid/late 60's band. It is the same band and from the same acetate as...

2 - "Don't Turn Me Down". There is also one other very cool song on this acetate "Don't Blow Your Mind". I'll put it up here soon.

3 - "Attitude" is an acetate by the Australian combo Laurie Wade's Cavaliers, who had 3 good-to-killer 45s on CBS Australia. Cavalier Attitude, get it? You should have guessed...

Ferraris.jpg

Ferraris2.jpg

4 - "Mustangs2" is actually "The Ferraris" who had this acetate on the Don Lee Label fem Lansing, MI. I've posted the scribbled sleeve so that someone out there may be able to work out the exact location for the combo.

5 - "Eugene" is actually called "Shopkeeper" on the tape, and it's by The Blades Of Grass who had one 45 release on Fine, and recorded at the same session.

6 - "Light My Fire" is by Rochester's Rockin' Rulers, the Young Tyrants. These 2 songs were recorded at the same session..

All my unofficial entries are from Fine Recording Studio master tapes. As far as I can work out, they are...

The Angry Men - "The Hullaballoo"

These 4 are by The Pharaohs, taken from 2 master tapes containing a total of 6 songs by the group. The names of the songs are "Rich To Rags", "Since You've Been Gone", "I Knew You Lied", and an un-named instrumental which I call "The Mummy", which seems to fit.

This is one side of a triple acetate set, unrelated to the Fine Recording Studio. It's by Vee & The Night Beats, recorded at Damon Studios, Kansas City.

That about wraps it up

It's nearly time for the Official Prize Presentation Ceremony.

Mr. Frantic would you please nominate your top choices from the Prize List, and I will arrange for them to be professionally graded for your consideration.

After that, I will put forward my idea for the next competition, which should be even more fun than the first one.

Cool! Hope I'll be able to participate with something worthwhile this time around. Thank you for doing this by the way.

Thanks Mark for this very entertaining (and educating) thread and contest!
I'm also very sorry Frantic, to hear of the loss of your Mother.
