How Unknown Can You Go?

I would choose the suitcase, because I'm pretty certain that when it came down to it you would feel bad about sending a dog turd and would send the Vikings instead.

It would be chosen at random from a selection of 21 identical suitcases already loaded with paydirt. Even I would not know what was inside. On the customs declaration, I would write "contains either one used 45 rpm phono record, or one dehydrated canine fecal specimen"

Outside, would you be so kind to unveil the ID of the trax you posted (1 ÷ 6, including the 2 test samples; just for my private archive) ? thx in advance

Talking of which, Mark, could you please create a new thread so we can discuss said comp?

I'm thinking of starting the new comp-petition this weekend. At least the first stage. Meanwhile, anyone intending to enter the competition, can think about possible themes, and the rules for the next few days.

Oops! I meant "compilation" - I see the ambiguous context now!

I realized I never identified my entries. If anyone cares, they are as follows:

1. 1. U.S.A. Ltd.: Maureen (Milk) The only copy I know of is now owned by a non-board member. MTM heard this at least 5 years ago, but for whatever reason, didn’t get the info to include in TBM. I may have gotten this after he went through my collection.
2. 2. The Mystics: Have You Ever Seen Me -acetate. This is the band from Westchester NY that has the 45 on Ren-Vell and is on the Battle of the Band comp on that label.
3. 3. Strange Odyssey: Echo Of a Dream – acetate from California.
4. 4. The Druids: Lies – the first of my two tracks off LP’s that Joey D was certain everyone would know. This was from a high school review called “Hoikety-Choik” from Texas.
5. 5. Peter’s Progeny: Tobacco Road. The 2nd LP track. This was the only one I thought someone might have known, as the LP it comes from is reviewed in Acid Archives.
6. 6. Mother Forest: Crystal Rebelaison – mastertape only, location unknown.

Many folks, me included, prefer people not post ebay links until the auction is ended.

That would have defeated the purpose of my posting the link: to give anyone wanting to acquire it, the chance to bid on it. Would you care to explain your position on this?

The 'position' is you're advertising someone's auction, which 1) could mean you have an interest in it which should be noted, and/or 2) people hope for a chance to win an item at a reasonable cost - when it's advertised here auctions tend to get much more competitive and pricey. If this 45 was a major want of mine, I'd be bummed to see the auction listing advertised here just for the sake of bringing attention to it. I'm not interested in this particular auction, I've already owned a copy with the picture sleeve.

Besides, on any week people could put links to a hundred different ebay auction listings that are worth attention. It's not the point of this forum.

Okay, thanks for making your position clear, chas_kit. Allow me to consider your objections in relation to my linking of the Fabulous Plaids auction:

Point 1. Irrelevant in this case

Point 2. Unlikely, considering the item in question.

Point 3. ("not the point of this forum") The context of my linking this item was the "How Unknown Can You Go" competition, and the fact that one of my entries became available on eBay. My motivation was simply pointing it out for the benefit of anyone who may have liked it and wanted to own it. It is definitely NOT a big-ticket item likely to generate high bids.

As a more general observation on what you've raised, most people don't have the time (or perhaps choose to prioritise it otherwise) to scour eBay everyday for their wanted records. On the other hand, there are, no doubt, individuals who have plenty of time on their hands, or perhaps no life outside of record collecting. I can understand them wanting being very secretive about their finds, and having no need for "tips" from others. Most eBayers, I would suggest, have a foot in both camps: not having a lot of time to scour eBay, being glad to receive alerts on wants, but being secretive about anything they find which they want for themselves. That's just human nature. There has to be a balance in life: not all take and no give. Please understand that not everybody shares your world view or conditions, and allow for this.

On the subject of "the point of this forum", and assuming you mean G45 generally, my understanding is that the object is the dissemination of information for the mutual benefit of members, and ultimately, the mutual enrichment of our music collections. Nothing I have done is in contravention of this. Please share with us how you see the object of G45.

Furthermore, my linking of the Fabulous Plaids auction resulted in your post, in which you mentioned that it came with a picture sleeve. This was something I didn't know; therefore, I did ultimately benefit from it. Maybe then point 1 does apply

Let me add one more point to Chas's 2 point list: tradition. For the 10 years of Garage Punk Forums / G45 links to current auctions - outside of your goods announced in a sales forums- has always been frowned on.

We all hope to grab a copy of "Candy Colored Conspiracy" for .99.

Yes to the above. Most active members on this board are on top of their game and are already aware of all ongoing auctions of interest. If not, their loss, others gain. I can certainly recall auctions I've won for a reasonable price due to countless hours of internet legwork (which means browsing through 1000s, if not 5 digits even, of titles for hours on end) or knowing about titles, labels or song titles others don't.

It is the amount of information you possess that gives you a head's up towards other competitors. A link to that piece of information, given by someone who has no interest in that particular ongoing auction is nothing else than extremely annoying. That is why it has been an (almost) unspoken rule, or a gentleman's agreement on this (and prior) boards to not link to live auctions. You, as a newbie here, are kindly given the explanation to this.
