Insane Collection update

I have some small sense of what's going on, as I am friends with an Australian collector who was going to visit Marek to see the collection. As someone who buys/sells/trades records, I know it is always way preferable to deal in person versus mailorder with its non-cash payments, packing, shipping, risk of loss, paypal chargebacks, etc. Unless Marek had agreed to an exclusivity agreement with Mark regardling the sale of the records, I see no problem with him also selling the records locally. It seems his error was putting records on the set sale list that had already been sold in person. I also think that while it was certainly very nice of Mark to take 32 wantlists and help with the pre-sale of those items, it was adding another layer of complexity to the proceedings which made a scenario like this more likely. Don't get me wrong, I thank Mark for his efforts in trying to make this work, and I was able to purchase one record at a price I thought very fair, but it's hardly surprising how it ended.

Obviously Marek can to sell the records in the most comfortable way for him, but is embarrassing to Mark receive a list, send messages to some collectors, this are agree with the deal, and after this send another message with apologies because the record is already sold when Marek put this record in the list, if Marek had not put this record in the list, nothing happened, and if this happened once, why not can happen other times

Dealing with record collectors through the mail is always going to be tough going. The grading disagreements. The packaging complaints. The sky high shipping costs. Customs slowing the whole international shipping mess down. Paypal chargebacks. The first dibs getting trumped by a human with cash coming to visit. All of these variables make for melt down opportunities (for the buyer to become an element that makes the seller not wanna do it anymore).

Let the locals go thru and buy what they want, then make a list of everything else, and put it up for sale here.
Best option.

100% agree. And it should be one big list, not this little bit per month. And the person posting the list should be managing the sales, so things can be marked hold or sold as needed.

I would like to counter the above with:

If you know what you are doing, problems with mail-order will be little to none.

Let the locals go thru and buy what they want, then make a list of everything else, and put it up for sale here.
Best option.

That's fine, but if Marek wanted to do local and mail order at the same time, there's just one additional "rule". Keep them mutually exclusive. If he wants to offer everything to the locals first, fine; do so then offer to us (or whoever else worldwide). But if he wants to create a list (or series of lists) for here, once a certain list is given to Boss to offer, those records should be frozen. Don't offer these to the locals until the mail order sales are done. Then repeat the same with the next mail order group.

I had a similar situation when I first started selling on eBay. A local dealer wanted to consign some of his LPs for me to offer on eBay. When I explained about the timing - having to list them for a week, then the time needed to collect the monies, especially from overseas (this was pre-Paypal), he asked "What if Isel lthe record meanwhile?".
I said that first I had to have the records on hand before listing them. I had to grade them and take photos of the covers. Then once I had a bid, that record was as good as sold. And even if a record didn't have a bid, I couldn't keep shutting down auctions. It was a bad look.
He couldn't comprehend this and that ended things right there. Needless to say, he's never done mail order or online sales (or, to my knowledge, had anyone do any for him).

buncha people who know how to deal records up in here.

Yes, plenty of good free advice based on many years of collective experience. Oh well. Thanks to Mark for trying, your efforts are appreciated. And I hope that acetate you scored made it worth your while to get mixed up in this.

re: one big list.
i was looking forward to having one set sale list per month for the whole year. sounded like fun but just didn' t happen. no surprise, it's the INSANE collection.:boggle:

There's some bad news. I am pulling out of assisting with the Peter Bliek sale.
All the records will still be sold somehow, but I am unsure how it will happen.

The reason for pulling out, is that Marek wants to sell privately off the lists at the same time as offering them via the forum. I can't work that way.

It's disappointing, but I don't want my reputation trashed after promising I would assist people with their wants. I have no idea what happens from here, except I am out.

Frankly, Mark, I feel worse for you than anybody. You volunteered to do a fair bit of work without any compensation. I believe you said you knew the person who owns the collection, and your heart was in the right place, trying to help that person get fair market value to assist with their medical expenses. Also, I believe you truly wanted to help the forum members all have a fair chance of getting some of their top wants. That is the only reason you would have offered to accept want lists. I don't think anyone else asked you to do that. So from my perspective, you invested the most, and gained the least. But I support your decision to pull out 100%.

Sure, I would have liked to have had a chance to purchase items from this collection. However, I don't even have enough time to listen to the records I already own. So, I'll be just fine.

Thanks again for all the effort you put forth. For a guy that once splattered blood all over a pile of records, you turned out to be a pretty swell guy. :)

To be honest I had no idea there were so many collectors in Australia who are willing to drop $1000 or more on a US '60s garage 45. Where have they been up til now?

If I read between the lines on what Mark and others closer to source are saying, that won't be much. I would like to think otherwise, even though I didn't buy anything from the first list, I am still interesting in getting a few wanted records.

I can't blame Marek for selling records in person, I would much prefer to do so myself in the same situation. I wonder, though, if we won't be seeing some of the purchased records on ebay or facebook shortly. Selling rare records is sure way of gaining new 'friends' or having people you haven't talked to a long time coming back into your life.

I would also like to thank Mark for making the effort and taking the time to do this, and having patience to communicate with the unhappy few who were stiffed when Mark was completely without fault.

I would like to counter the above with:
Let the locals go thru and buy what they want, then make a list of everything else, and put it up for sale here.

I didn't purchase anything either but I really appreciate the assistance Mark offered to facilitate the selling of his collection and offering it here to members. It did generate some excitement, didn't it ? I'm glad you got some long time wants, Mark! You deserve it, my friend!

Thanks to everyone who posted comments showing an understanding of the situation. I don't blame Marek either, except for making an error with the list. But small errors like that can create huge disappointments for collectors who are missing out on their #1 want or #2 want, after thinking it was in the bag.

The problem is, I had absolutely no control over which records would suddenly disappear from the lists, at any time. And quite a lot of them seemed to be here one minute, gone the next. I also felt bad that the Jan list only had 38 records, after I had seen the original offering before it was pre-sold. I don't mind creating some excitement, anticipation and even hype, as long as the end result is not a fizzer! To Marek, it's just records sold. To me, it's friends disappointed.

So again, you made the best move possible by not continuing the lists on here. It sounds like it would have been an exercise in futility. Not that anyone would have blamed you for missed wants; the fault, if there is any, is due to Marek's lack of experience in selling and not taking advantage of the fact he had in front of him a superb guide. With all the effort you were putting in on his behalf, it's a shame he didn't take advantage of that opportunity which would have been to the benefit of all involved, not to mention giving you some better consideration for thise efforts.
Like all others here, I extend my appreciation for those selfless efforts.

I have no hard feelings towards Marek other than frustration. It's just the situation that was impossible for me to continue. More for what could keep happening, than for what did happen. If I had the time over, I would have just said to Marek - ok, join the forum and go for it, post the records yourself in the Set Sale Supermarket. But I thought it could be better than that, and I gave it a shot which ultimately didn't work out.

I've been over to Marek's house for a visit. I explained to him that I could not go on with supervising the sales of the Peter Bliek collection, and the reasons for it. But I offered to continue hosting the sale here at G45central, but without any personal involvement from me.

Marek was very agreeable to this, and he has already joined the forum as dr-punk. You can see his first post regarding the sale, in the '60s Garage and Teenbeat forum. Because this is an extraordinary collection, I agreed to let Marek use the main forum instead of the Set Sale Supermarket, for better access and exposure. The Secret Society and Set Sale Supermarket will not be involved with the sale from this point on.

Unfortunately, because I am no longer involved, there won't be any opportunity to refer to want lists. I'm sorry about the way that worked out, but it couldn't be helped. It just means that first come, first served rules will apply. I can only wish everyone who is interested, the very best of luck. Be sure to get in early if you're keen!

Thanks a lot, sir, you're doing a great job anyway!
