Hi,

Has anyone heard Charly's JohnDavid Bartlett Anthology ? I was wondering if someone would be able to clarify specifics - are these newly recorded songs that he wrote in the 60's/70's? Sources claim that it's an anthology of material recorded in the 60's and 70's but after listening to a few sound bites (of each track) it clearly sounds like something recorded within the past ten years - meaning the production is too clean for something claiming to be recorded in the 60's and 70's....also, given Charly's track record, one has to wonder if they are trying to scam music enthusiasts once again.....

Per the notes in the booklet the recordings span from 1969 to 2006; the dates on some could not be ascertained. The master tapes for the International Artists LP, at this time, are to be considered "lost."

I bought Bartlett's self-released CD several years ago, I assume it's the same material as what is now being released. The bulk of it is 70s or maybe even 80s recordings. I doubt there is a single tone of 60s music on it. Bartlett speaks of being influenced by John Martyn, so don't expect to hear another Golden Dawn... one of the tracks on the old CD was called "The River Layer" in tribute to the Elevators, I seem to recall it was the psychiest thing on board, a guitar instro.

Bartlett was there back in the day though -- he "plays" the clinking sound on the Elevators "May The Circle Remain Unbroken" by using a glass ashtray in the studio, plus some Echoplex...

Patrick, here is the track listing for the Charly CD. Are any of these on the self released CD that you have?

Actually these don't look too familiar, one or two tracks tops. A lot of Elevators tunes, clearly. On the CD I had (not sure I still own it!) it was pretty much all Bartlett originals. This Charly thing could well be very recent recordings. I bet he approached them with the idea that this release could finance the search for his original IA recordings, which is the same story that went around 10 years ago. There was brief talk of Rockadelic issuing some of Bartlett's stuff but the label passed. I'm still somewhat miffed that I blew like $30 on that old limited CD which turned out to contain zero 60s music and very little in terms of psychedelia either... nothing against Bartlett though, who has a LOT of stories to share, if someone can get him in the right mood. Probably a book coming from his corner down the line... baby-boomer '60s reminiscence vol 35642 of a projected series of 500000. :)

We used a track I recorded in '69 at ACA Studio for "Splash One". I also recorded an electric 12 string guitar track (sans vocal) at the same session. In 2006 I put a vocal on that guitar at Cedar Creek. It was so weird to sing with myself from 37 years earlier.

Patrick, The Velvet Monkey Wrench was a band I had in the '80s. Of course there wasn't any '60s stuff on it. Sorry you were miffed. You should hear "Driftin" off the new CD. I can't seem to upload it here, but I'll send it to you in an email.
