missing comps

This "buy or die" thing is kinda silly. Nowadays people should just set the beast free. Who cares anyways except for 100 sumpin old wrinkly scrotum poles..?

Where do all the Forum cd's we "shared" fit into this conversation? It was a different site, but with many of the same folks. Maybe they were just "Abnormal" people. Seems now if you ask for a piece of music you get a "Psychotic Reaction". When I was in the hospital Tim Warren "shared" a box with me which contained a complete set of the "Back From The Grave" and the "Teenage Shutdown" cd series. Glad I didn't ask him for them.

We are abnormal, Tom :) Hahaha ! I believe that the forum comp explosion ended when it appeared that they were being placed on file sharing services and some unscrupulous sorts started using them to make unauthorized comps for profit. I recall that many of us stopped sharing because it was impeding the guys that were legitimately licensing these songs and investing the time and money to do it right. It began affecting some folks that are pretty well respected by people on this forum, including the Tim Warren's of the world. Hope you're fully recovered from your hospital stay! Good to see you back on the forum, and really dug your into in TeenBeat Mayhem!

Thanks eargasm, I understand. Things do change and missuse is definitely one of those things. To bad the actions of a few spoil it for the rest, but that is the way it goes. I know there are some very generous people on here.

A lot of stuff was taken off filesharing services for copyright violations...all 70-some volumes of In Dan's Garage, for example. If I were to do a comp (which, as I don't have any particularly rare or valuable garage records, I probably won't) I'd probably go the route of a CD or tape.

It is a pity though. Look at all the 70s punk blogs with downloadable content, and the new 70s heavy rock blog with incredible material (don't dare to mention it so no frantic person blows the whistle..)
To let the scene grow you gonna HAVE to change the way the music is distributed and available.

And no, 'vinyl only' is not the right answer.

Lee, what I have found lately is that even if you record a cd, new or old music, people want only certain selections and they want them right now. What's the answer, downloadable files each purchased separately. Of course this doesn't work for collectors and for that market re-issus on vinyl or other collectors or unknowing or uncaring people will continue to buy and sell vinyl. Nowadays many don't want a pyhsical disc or any other media to have to store or carry, just the music in their ear. The one thing of the older media styles I really miss through the "new' method is the artwork. But, a musician wanting to have people listen to and buy his music has to be willing to make that sacrifice.
