Only for the 60s garage newbies.
From forum member Keb Darge.

Here's the blurb:

Due 10/03...Keb Darge & Cut Chemist present The Dark Side – 30 Sixties Garage Punk and Psych Monsters
Picking up where they left off on the 2007 compilation 'Lost & Found – Rockabilly & Jump Blues', Keb Darge & Cut Chemist join forces once again, this time to explore the wonderful world of 1960s Garage music. While Rockabilly could be defined as a DIY emulation of the music of Buddy Holly, Eddie Cochran and others by young American artists, Garage was heavily influenced by British bands of the day like the Beatles, Kinks & Rolling Stones.
Simple drum kits, guitars and the occasional organ keep the sound honest and raw, retaining a palpable sense of excitement even to this day.
With a multitude of bands springing up all over the USA, many of these wonderful records were released in tiny numbers, making certain titles almost impossible to find.
Keb Darge’s love affair with this intriguing genre happened almost by accident, while on the hunt for obscure Northern Soul records. "DJ Shadow told me I would like Garage years ago, but I didn’t listen." Hearing a few records he liked and being assured by collectors that they were classified as ‘Garage’ got him hooked, so for the last years he’s been digging obsessively for the stuff.
Knowing Cut Chemist was a collector, he suggested they collaborate on a compilation, and 'The Dark Side' was born.
30 obscure records, some of which change hands for frightening amounts of money, all with wonderful stories attached as told in Keb’s encyclopedic and entertaining liner notes.
“This compilation is not aimed at the many collectors of this wonderful style of music. I am a very late arrival on this scene, and still have a hell of a lot to learn, and buy. This is more for people like I was just three years ago, people oblivious to beauty, power, and excitement of the sixties garage sound.” – Keb Darge 2016

Why so many tracks that have been reissued over and over though?
This would be good to pass on to curious friends as a mix CD-r
That's what I say. If for some reason they found all the bands, found unknown cool pics, found the masters, provide cool new fun facts, paid royalties and got the rights, then it would be cool. Otherwise....regurgition. And don't even think about gettin' me goin' on that cover.

Sound quality, legality and presentation will factor massively into judging any garage comp released in 2017. Dont know nothing about either, but we do know the tracklist, which is comprised of well known tracks. So the blurb is right in stating this is not for the cognoscenti. But then: If an official label such as BBE thinks doing this as a 2xLP and CD is worth their buck because there's a market for it among newbies, then what's wrong with that? Worst that can happen is some new set of ears being exposed to the music we cherish - and the Savoy's getting financially further out of reach for me than it is already.

I hope I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt that royalties have been paid. If the liner notes include new band info and photos, I'm 100% in. However, "with wonderful stories attached as told in Keb’s encyclopedic and entertaining liner notes" leads me to believe it's info scraped from the Internet with Keb's comments. Hopefully Keb can fill us all in.

Here's what a friend of mine who isn't on this forum says about this comp

39 years behind the trend. i’ll take Pebbles 1 & 2 :yikes:

I went to one site and other than the title DARK SIDE, the whole page was about Keb Darge and Cut Chemist. Not one word about the cd. SAY WHAT:boggle:

I've noticed that the soul and funk scenes are all about who discovers what, and the DJ's influence on the scene exposing the records. Not all people involved are tied in with this kind of ego, but many are so hung up on what DJ played what tune first, at what venue, etc. Th stories behind the performers seem to take a backseat .
I find this terribly boring and dull.

With no disrespect intended toward Mr. Darge, a "three year love affair with this intriguing genre" hardly seems like a long enough time frame to qualify as encyclopedic. Maybe copious liner notes would be a better promo phrase.

This is true. DJ Shadow released a psych comp once but never put any titles on it.
Just for the snobbery I guess. I.e. DJ S is the star not the music itself.

People were searching all over the net to discover what the songs were. There was one guy who joined the Yahoo Psychedelica group and the Garage Punk forum offering $10 for each song someone could identify for him. I ID'ed Hickory Hollow "Never Happen" and and he asked for my Paypal account to pay me (which I turned down).

Are you shitting me? They were trying to pull a cover up on known songs? :flush:

Yeah, I remember when we ID'd songs on that comp over at the old Garage Punk forum.
Damn, 14(!) years ago or something. Scary :razz:

No joke.
George G also gave him one, then said "pay up" and the guy took him seriously.
He actually emailed us from the group to pay.
I don't know if George accepted.
Here's the original message:

Hello,

I have seven unknown songs from a mix (without a tracklisting) that
I've been desperately trying to figure out for years. There are only
seven unknown songs that I have all together. The last one is one of
my favorite song of all time which I'm still trying to unravel for a
real long time.

I have the following offer regarding these seven unknown songs:

I will pay $10.00 (instantly through paypal) for every song that gets
identified. I'm definitely serious...so you could possibly make $70
bucks here!

So if you can correctly identify any one of these tunes or by perhaps
getting in touch with other hardcore psychedelic collectors out there
to figure out who sings these songs - you will get paid:)

Anyways, I usually check once a day to see if any new findings exist
within this topic, so you can bet I'll be here rewarding the ones who
manage to discover any of the unknown songs. So try to get on it as
soon as possible, burn these songs onto a CD-R if you want and ask
your buddies or the local record dealer. I wish I lived in
California since that's where the hardcore underground psychedelic
music lovers seems to be at:(

Here are the links to the seven unknown songs and I wouldn't mind
uploading these songs to any website that anyone here prefers
(whatever it takes, I really just wanna tackle these songs for once
and for all!):

Song 1 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21399
Song 2 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21428
Song 3 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21447
Song 4 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21462
Song 5 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21478
Song 6 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21486
Song 7 -> http://www.savefile.com/files/21499

So let the game begin! Free money is up for grabs:)

There's a whole thread of discussion, but I don't think it's accessible except to group members.

Yes, nice idea but missed the boat by about 25 years. It would be nice if the sales proved me wrong, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

This new comp is licensed, so someone, if only the Harry Fox agency, will be getting money. The label is trying to contact individual bands - BBE asked me for contact info on a few bands almost 2 years ago.

On occasion I've sold a record to Keb, followed a few weeks later by people (including forum members) messaging me to see if I know of a copy of that particular record for sale ...
