Just learned recently, from a band member, that the master tapes for Weird Herald's single on Onyx were destroyed by Max Weise.

I'm aware that Weise had a studio in San Francisco, but was he affiliated with anything else on the Onyx label? Are the rest of the label masters still out there?

The TEARS Rat Race / Taxi Driver came out on Onyx and is on the Big Beat comp The Scorpio Records Story. The STYX Puppetmaster / Hey I'm Lost (Onyx 2200) will be on a upcoming Big Beat comp.

I recall Lou Dorren saying that Weiss took the master tapes when he left Fantasy. I interviewed him years ago for a piece on Kensington Forest over on garagehangover.com. The Onyx label (Bay Sound Productions) was Lou 's baby. Gray Newell, who's a member here, has a history of Weird Herald. Lou apparently was deeply impressed with them.

Lou Dorren did not own Onyx, that label was owned by Max Weiss. He started it after he sold Fantasy in late 1967. There were several of Lou's Baysound Productions released on Onyx & Magnum. This info is from Alec Palao who is personal friends with Lou.
