R.I.P. Hilton Valentine, Animals guitarist. Dead at 77

R.I.P.
I had the pleasure of meeting him at a mid-2010s record show run by a Connecticut college radio station. He was set up selling records from his collection. He had boxes full of great 45 at nice prices. He and his wife were very pleasant and friendly, particularly as no one was fawning over him.

The Animals after departure of Alan Price and before Burdon split the old band, was one of the most influential bands for 60's US garage. We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, It's My Life, I'm Gonna Change The World, Inside Looking Out and Don't Bring Me Down are immortal songs.
RIP

I've been good friends with Hilton's wife Germain for close to 40 years, and have known Hilton for over 25 years. I spent a few hours with her and Hilton in late November and he was in compromised health. He was always a very friendly and open man and a delight to spend time with.

As we were saying goodbye that afternoon, not knowing it would be the last time we would do so, I asked Mr. Valentine who his favorite guitar players were. To no surprise, he quietly said - Chuck Berry and Hank Marvin.

A quiet and unassuming man, a horrible shame he has passed on.

I have been watching a lot of their clips on YT today and found their stage setting a bit odd. Singer, organ and bass up front, guitar second row and drummer last.
To me it would make more sense to put the guitar upfront and the bass next to the drummer.
Also I realized how great Hilton's riffs were, he should have gotten writing credits for that!

Yes, the best thing that happened to original Animals is Alan Price departure. He is pedestrian piano and organ player and taked out a lot of band's power in the studio. Once he's gone, Hilton got to fore and their sound became more dirtier and rawer.

Seeing Price swig down Vodka and Orange Juice In Dylan's Don't look back documentary is sickening :flush:
