I think the ratings in combination with the song descriptions do a great job of giving you an idea if the song might interest you or not . I don't think the ratings can , or are intended to , substitute for personal taste .
I for example have a dislike for certain vocal and guitar stylings found mostly on later 60's recordings . A bunch of these songs are getting ratings of 6 and higher in TBM , which means that apparently not many people out there share my dislike .
I totally realise that. I understand that we all have different taste and preferences when it comes to this.
I was just surprised that the cabinet members rated a for example (in my opinion) totally unintersting tune like Four More "Problem Child" two-to-three notches higher than for example (again, in my opinion) top class tunes like Lord Charles & The Prophets "Ask Me No Questions", The Emeralds "Like Father Like Son" and The Pastels "Circuit Breaker".
Using the TBM ratings, these comps get 5,8 and 6,5 out of 10 each. That's without counting the unrated/unlisted tracks, but it would suprise me if they would make a huge impact on the overall rating.
That's like a "3 stars out of 5" review, which I personally don't think is fair at all. Or perhaps it's just that, like with a lot of decently compiled comps, these tunes as a whole make a greater impact than each of these tunes on their own hidden away as track 23 on 30 separate CDr's filled with otherwise middle-range stuff.
I don't know, no big deal really, I'm just musing. :)
