I'm sorry if this breaks some sort of forum rules or policy. As I said I'm a newbie to the genre and have no idea where to look, until I found this place. You guys seem really knowledgeable so I thought it was worth a try. I'm asking for my dad, he's not too computer savvy.

Right, so he's is looking for a song which contains the lyrics: 'Got an uncle in (insert US place), got a (something) we can (something that rhymes with the US place name)'

So, it would go something like: 'Got an uncle in Massachusetts, got a wagon, we can use it' except it's not that and he can't remember what the lyrics are specifically. The only Google result I'm getting is Little Feat - Time Loves a Hero, but that's not the song he's after. He heard it on a alt-rock/garage-ish compilation which was bought in 1987, so it's not from Nuggets from the Golden State series, which hefirst thought it was. In fact, he's pretty sure it's not from any of the Pebble or Nuggets series, he's got most of those and he knows them well.

Thanks for any help! :)

Not that I would be the expert to help you out with this, but haven't you got any more information about the song? I mean what style? Any specific instrumentation? Any more lyrics? More info about the compilation? Was it a CD as "Nuggets from the Golden State"? And what's special about the song that makes your dad looking for it so desperately?

The style is an uptempo, almost jaunty, garage/guitar rock 60's influenced sound. It was vinyl, not CD. No more lyrics, no more info about the compilation - it was decades ago and I realise there is very little info. It's probably a case of you know the song or you don't.

Not really desperately, but y'know. We talked about music and he just mentioned and it piqued my interest. Why not eh? Broaden my musical horizons in the process of helping my old man out.

Maybe we can find out the song by imagining the lyrics. I'll try and make start:
"I`ve got an uncle in Fort Worth and a dead man in a hearse..."
Or even better:
"I`ve got an uncle in Fort Worth and a song I`ve never heard (of)..."
;)

Right, this doesn't match any of your criteria really, certainly not the lyrics, but for some reason it jumped into my head.

Not bad!
It starts rather psychedelically, but then evolves into "an uptempo, almost jaunty, garage/guitar rock 60's influenced sound":
