stuff you've been DJing

I have occasionally put Green Fuzz on purely for my own enjoyment.... people generally hate it, especially anyone wanting soul music, which is a big deal in the South Coast of England, where I reside.

I sometimes will try and annoy folks by putting something totally square on.... I once put this on for a joke, people got up, then when the familiar vocals kicked in everyone walked off the dancefloor, you should see the faces, of course, I don't let the track finish, but oh my lord, the couple of times, I have done it, it always cracks me up.

People have no sense of humour.

before you ask Frantic... no I wasn't happy ; )

Suffice to say, I only DJ very rarely.

I dj infrequently, a few times a year now. My last set was:

Scotch on Socks - The Shadows
You're Too Much - The Eyes
Going All The Way - The Squires
I Cannot Stop You - Cherry Slush
Girl - The Staccatos
And She'll Cry - The Celtics
Born Loser - Murphy and the Mob
What A Girl Can Do - The Hangmen
Comin Up Fast - The Great Believers
You Can Be My Baby - The Red Squares
Be A Caveman - The Avengers
She Said Yeah - Steve Davis
That's All Right - The Blue Aces
Baby Don't Look Down - The Blues Council
Hold On - Sharon Tandy
Save My Soul - Wimple Winch
Tic Toc - Scots of St James

It was great fun.

Here's 3 I would probably try

Danny & The Sessions - Mojo
A-Jaes - I'm Leaving You
Carnabys - Jump And Dance

Danny & Sessions is a well known DJ spin....a Pittsburgh record. Carnaby has been played on the Mod scene since it was released!

when i am djin i play stuff like this:

First crow to the moon- Spend your life

Don't take it personal, as all the tracks above are truly great, but apart "Shadows in the night", that's records for the chill-out zone, I guess ?

well, depends on what you like i guess. those songs worked great.
if you think its gotta be crowdpleasers all the way, thats your taste then.

A good DJ always play to the floor 1st, crowd second, self 3rd. And if your playin' for yourself over the floor/crowd I would fire you.

as i said, those songs worked great, but that is not a playlist, just random songs i like and play.
there is a difference between regular party crowd and 60's crowd, or if you dj in a bar or in a club.

Once again...floor 1st (if you have one) bar second (if there is no floor) Self 3rd if it's dead.

Totally agree with you. And there's so many killer records round there to please the dance floor AND you/me the DJ as well....
That said, I'm maybe a special case, as I get thrills in my spine each and everytime I blast Kingsmen's Louie Louie at full volume.

You're fully right. My post was more dedicated to the play lists used for regular party crowd, as that's IMO the real challenge. You can spin mostly whatever you like in bars, and 60s crowds will dig anything 60s anyway (I recently attended a 60s party, after a 60s neo garage punk live show... the DJ had only a couple of LPs like Pebbles 6 (yes, the mod one with the awfull sound quality), Transworld Punk Rave Up vol.1 and vol.2, Savage Sounds from South Africa, etc. and he managed to keep the floor packed till the end only with those comps... that's what I call a "dedicated audience"... as long as it's cool, "punk" and 60s, it works (60s / garage crowds are heavy drinkers as well, guess it helps to get your mind blew out by Pebbles 6 when you're shitfaced). I won't even mention the 60s mod aristocratic crew, as that's something else: they dig whatever 60s stuff as long as it's "groovy", played on original 7''s and if the DJ's haircut is OK with the mod tables of the law.

I hence think that many of the playlists above are actually made of stuff spinned in bars, not for dance-floors. I'd never dare to spin The Squires' Goin all the way to a regular crowd, and the break in the middle of Born Loser is impossible to handle. One of my favourite records ever, but at home ! And heres the kind of killer I'm looking for, as that's something anyone with 2 ears can't resist to:

plus i don't get paid so i'm gonna play what i want to hear
If you played in a club where you did get paid, you would be obligated to play what you got paid for. Keeping the floor full and the paying customers happy with songs that THEY WANT TO HEAR, or at least songs you think that they'd want to hear !!! Not a full side of jim messina & the jesters as you posted earlier.

i guess we'll all be listening to gay disco all night then. you have a problem with that jim messina & the jesters record ? cause its killer surf music

I love that record, but a DJ who played one whole side at a club isn't doing his job. I listen to what I want to listen to at home. Besides anything that I would play that would fill the floor would be what I wanted to listen to anyway. I would just pick a portion of the songs I like that also work the crowd.

my one condition would be i'm gonna play whatever i want. it you don't like it , too bad for you
Hey Nad...I don't care if you play in your bathroom staring at yourself in the mirror. Sylvain started this thread by asking for help filling floors not emptying them. Get on board man!
