A: Nope this was a direct recording.
Conclusion: Edit TBM.

Our former G45 member thingstocome who passed last June ended up with a copy that looks near mint. He graciously sent it to me so that I could make a digital transfer for TeenBeat Mayhem radio, while telling me before sending that "I'm not sure you will be happy, it plays with some background hiss. Sure enough, when I made the transfer, the hiss started just before the music. It played better than my copy, but not perfect to say the least. The other 3 copies with collectors I know suffer from the same defect. Which proves the "master" used had the noise to begin witth. Likely mastered from an acetate disc, as was kinda common back then. And, depending on the condition of this 45, the lower the grade, the more prominent the defect sounds.
I did hear from Mike Stax a few years ago, asking me if I knew where a hi-grade copy of this 45 was, or if I had one. Someone planned to issue both sides on a 45 and they were on the hunt for a clean transfer. i've not heard anything since regarding the status of the project.
