Teenbeat Mayhem launch date......

Mine arrived in Sydney this morning. I got waylaid on my way to breakfast and found it hard to put down once I began to leaf through it. It's an impressive work. I haven't delved too deeply into it yet but the design is excellent. Finally 1960s garage has the definitive reference work that many other music genres have had for years. This book belongs in University reference libraries just as much as it does on the shelves of collectors and fanatics.

Got mine a week or so ago and it's been an outstanding read. A real testament to the music we love. Thanks Mike!

Surprised not to find the early Jerden/Tower Ian Whitcomb 45 at least in the Around the World, Across the Sea. Though on the novelty side, they have a strong beat band feel and a Pacific Northwest connection.

Yeah, he was a borderline type case. We did not have enough room to place Whitcomb within the the "Around The World" chapter, as that was limited to a single page. When it came down to a decision, page space and obscurity over familiarity were the two factors that led us to a judgement as to in or out.

You can tell there was a limited space on that page, this make sense. definitely no big deal.

Book arrived here a coupla days ago. Stellar work! I've started reading it and going through it lightly... What a massive work and what a massive success, I'd have to say. Thanks Mike!

Here is my advice to those of you obsessed with the ratings in TBM: It reflects the personal taste of the raters. We all like to have our own personal opinions validated by the majority, but it won't likely happen, so just make a playlist or CD or tape of your own 10s and enjoy it.
As far as things that are included or excluded, I am guessing that some of those are intentional, and others perhaps not. We all have probably found a few things we are convinced should be in there (I have started my list). Personally I am more than willing to share, and we could all give our input IF Mike is ever insane enough to do a revised edition. Honestly, Mike, I hope you don't. It's a great job and I think you've already invested enough blood sweat and tears for one lifetime.

Hey Manos,

The revised edition won't happen. But, I welcome all additions, corrections and oversights, as those will be noted in Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem. Again, something like a 200-220 page, softcover book is what that will be, retail for about $30.

Never read before that John Cale and Lou Reed had been members of the All Night Workers? The line-up I have for them is Otis Smith, Lloyd Baskin (of Sea Train fame), Billy Elminger, Steve McCord and Herb Flowers. Also is that the same guys who did the 45 "Honey & Wine/The Collector" on Cameo?

This is a kind of uncalled-for aggressive and patronising tone. The ratings are an important part of the book, and it's only natural that the readers make personal comments about them. You can either read them or ignore them, it's up to you.

The Shandells other Woodrich 45 was an oversight.
If I did not have the 45, or a dub of the songs (CD, cassette, compilation copy) as well as see it via my collection travel forays, it was difficult to make sure everything that should be included got included. As the project loomed larger (it grew by leaps and bounds around 2000), I decided that having the opportunity to audition the 45 and rate both sides was the main factor for inclusion over exclusion.

Just came home with the book in my hand, already dropped on the bar room floor..:p
Thanks Mike & all others who made it possible. You are all quite insane.

The amount of work Mike put into the A-Z TBM section is incomprehensible to mortals. The comprehensive listings, research for locations, the dates, label details and miscellaneous notes... each of these is enough to destroy the average mind crazy enough to attempt such a feat. I wonder how many readers will realise the amount of mental concentration that is needed to provide 20,000 song descriptions, each pretty much accurately summing up the sound of a record in a few short words?

I've been noticing how accurate the song descriptions are as well. Frightening.
