Yes, I agree on the Top 1000. Hard to argue against those sides in the Top 100 as well.
The cabinet members did yeoman work, voting on 14,800+ songs - from the guys who participated in every voting session (were there 100-125 of them?) to the guys who stepped in when duty called as fill-ins.

Nice to see a lot of the better known tracks, ones that were actually hits, included in the Top 1000. Sometimes it's all too easy to dismiss those tracks due to their lack of obscurity!

It is the first thing I saw, also, I opened the book to see the top 1000, and was actually pleased to see the Monkees, Seeds, Music Machine, etc... The entire scope of the 60's Garage sound has been identified, with common as well as crazy ultra-rare one-of a kinds, allows everyone to understand the presence and virtue of the small local bands the was the fetus that IS the world of the 1960's. The Honorable Mentions are a fun read, and this historic book should be owned by anyone even remotely interested in 1960's sounds... So far this is a great book, for my 2 cents!

14,780 songs were rated at the close. 16,500+ songs are cross referenced in the song title index. Some titles are not TBM worthy, so only one side is rated, or not rated in the book due to unavailability for a vote session (non-worthy TBM titles are shown unrated as an X) therefore, it is tuff to say exactly how many are listed. It would number at least 8,000 45s.

I didn't just look at comps, any kind of CD or vinyl, legit or not, was enough to be listed as "reissued". As far as I know the Castiles are available (with poor sound quality and a skip on one of the studio songs) on a Springsteen boot CD. I wouldn't be surprised if it was actually on a couple of boots and even maybe on vinyl but I don't know enough about Springsteen boots to tell for sure. Hopefully one day someone will do a proprer 45 of these 2 great songs.

i know of at least one serious attempt that has been made to Bruce which obviously didn't happen..i also had the pleasure of hanging out with his bass player a few times at a local record show and the subject came up, but it seems to be something Bruce just isn't interested in...I'd love to see the entire Castilles live show released in top quality as well!!

This is a way more important part of the book for me than the ratings. I can't believe how succinct and accurate they are. Really excelent work...

what other examples are there of sixties/early 70s garage/psych guys participating in the punk thing? Fred Cole I wouldnt really count in, as even in the Rats he sounded more garage than punk. But I guess Greg Sage qualifies even though a lot of punk-collectors dont like the Wipers and the band of the wrestling star doesnt fare well with garage guys. Kids/Manowar points in another direction. But I'd like to hear about more cross-decade style-hoppers.

The Rats sound often pretty punk to me (never heard the third LP: as good as the first 2? My fave is the 2nd).
A bunch of european people that did 70s punk played in 60s bands but less in the US it seems. There was SVT with Jack Casady from the Airplane (though SVT wasn't very punk). Sonic Rendezvous Band (Rationals, MC5). Was Ron Ashton in a garage band before the Stooges? If yes, you can add Destroy All Monsters. I'm sure there are more...

I think the top 1000 is especially good. Interestingly, it seems that most of my beefs with the ratings are with things that scored a 3 or 4.
