I recently acquired an acetate of the EPIX from 1965: Swingin' Mary/High Heeled Sneakers

I already had a handbill with the EPIX headlining over the Live Five:

Note that this is the Avalon Ballroom in Portland, not the one in San Francisco! Probably 1967, since the Live five broke up in 67.

There's lots of info on the EPIX on pnwbands.com:

You have to love the band jackets. So typical of the PNW bands of that time. And, of course, they had the obligatory sax player.

Members

John Fowler ~ Saxophone
Ron Marraccini ~ Drums
Jim McIntire ~ Organ
Gary Munden ~ Vocals
Michael Shade ~ Lead Guitar
Darrel Thrasher ~ Bass
John Goldman ~ Saxophone (later)

The EPIX was the house band for a teen nightclub called The Headless Horseman in Portland.

I managed to track down & correspond with one of the members of the band. He remembers recording the acetate. It was never released as a 45. They just used it to get bookings.

The EPIX played all over the Northwest including being co-billed with Del Shannon at the 1965 Vancouver BC Teenage Fair.

During the fair they heard Gloria by Them being played on the radio. The song had not made it to Portland yet. Gloria became really popular with their following at the time.

They recorded a second acetate: Hey Bird / Gloria. It got some airplay but never was pressed as a 45. No copies seem to remain. The tapes are also gone.

There were so many bands that were popular in the 60's and didn't leave a trace.

At least, with the EPIX, we get one brief moment in time.

Great find! I remember that police holding their ears pic, an absolute classic! I really liked the Live Five I've heard.

typo. I lived in Portland for a few years. Don't think I ever went to that part of town though. I remember finding some excellent records in the thrift stores on SE 82nd.
