These songs, recorded in stereo, were made at The Redbird in Manitowoc, WI on May 16, 1969. Recently the tapes were discovered packed away in a box and long forgotten. The vocals were taken from a PA speaker, so its dirty and real, and, as the "extremely limited" CD-r (paper labels!) proclaims on its (laser printed) cover, its "certainly enjoyable" and "one of Manitowoc's Best and Best Loved bands" - GREASE
This was borrowed to me by one of my coworkers, its got a paper label, hahaha. I was surprised to find that the sound quality was decent, and both mics had been well placed, allowing me the ability to bring it into a modern DAW and get the levels up where they should be, some EQ tweaks, etc.
"The Grease" are perhaps best known outside of Manitowoc, if at all, for being the first band of Jim Krueger, a rock musician whose song "We Just Disagree" was a hit for partner Dave Mason in 1977.
"In 1971 Jim moved to San Francisco to join the nationally known AB Skhy Band.1973 was the first year Jim was recording on a major label with the Tim Weisberg/Dreamspeaker Album. That same year Jim joined Dave Mason's Band touring and recording on and off for the next 20 years. In 1976 Jim wrote and recorded Dave's biggest hit, "We Just Disagree," earning Jim's second gold album. The following year, Jim, Mike Finnigan and Les Dudek formed the DFK Band, also on Columbia Records. In the early '80's, Jim joined Mike Finnigan and the Right Band on the live TV concert show "Rock & Roll Tonite." Jim and the band backed up legendary artists Les Paul, Todd Rundgren, Steven Stills, Etta James, Ted Nugent, Paul Butterfield and the Band, along with their own material. In 1987, Jim moved back to Manitowoc, but continued to record and tour with Dave Mason. The local bands, the Traveling Kingsburys and the Normal Adults, were formed in 1991. Jim let everybody in on his fun, creating the Happy Schnapps Combo. Jim died in 1993" (Quote - Rich Krueger)
Anyways, musically, Grease were young guys who were clearly pretty keen on their instruments. The bass player has a good groove, drums are hard hitting, there's a wailing hammond organ. Vocals are solid. They were a good group, and the recordings prove it. Tight, they obviously spent alot of time playing together.
I believe the only "legit" release by Grease was on USA Records (the same label as The Buckinghams), "Shimmick" b/w "Spoonful", release in 1969. On the record, they are credited as "The Grease", but locally they were just known as "Grease".
So, without any further ado, here are just plain Grease, one of Manitowoc's Best and Best loved bands...
