The main thing missing alot of times with the 60s garage band reunion shows is the edginess of the original songs. That edginess is a key ingredient also, so once that is removed, the music just doesn't pack the wallop of the original article. But after all, these guys are not in their teens-early 20s anymore so that to an extent should be expected. I appreciate it that some of these groups are making appearances still and are celebrating their music however. Personally I've seen some excellent, enjoyable shows from some of the old guard. ? and the Mysterians were a blast when I caught them in Montreal 2 years ago, Fred Cole is still playing killer shows in Pierced Arrows these days (of course don't get me stated on the half-dozen great Dead Moon shows I've witnessed as well), some excellent Roky Erikson & the Explosives performances including 2 with Billy Gibbons sitting in, and maybe the biggest surprise of all were the Novas (with the original drummer from the Outcasts) during SXSW 2010 who did a very short but very cool set.
On the flip side of the coin, I've seen some pretty terrible sets from the likes of Zakary Thaks (all sporting Hawaiian print shirts and with phaser on the guitar the enitre set!), the Green Fuz, and Kenny & the Kasuals.
I'll finally get to see the Sonics next month in NYC for the Norton 25th Anniversary. And if I get the chance someday I would definitely like to see the Remains and the Pretty Things in action.
