Thomas Funk

This isn't a seller being greedy, as the starting price was $85, but buyers willing to overpay. Congrats to the forum member who did well on his auction.

Wasn't suggesting greed. The seller is well established, reliable & fair. But I'm still stunned when relatively common 45s reach auction prices several 100% above what I thought they would.

the weird thing is he's still buying stuff to flip. i can't imagine the sell-through is worth the time/money at this point. my tastes seem to be mostly in the $800+ range given his pricing, but have managed to pick most of em off on ebay in the $2-400 range, often in better condition. he also picks the Garage Top 100 type tracks that everybody wants, but the impossibly rare stuff is mostly long gone, so there's not much left i'm fiending for.

the only time i did buy something off him, was during some ebay bucks promotion where i got 25% off (i always wondered if he'd be pissed).

When I visited Barry Wickham for the first time in 1996, he had two white boxes full of garage 45s, all "on hold" by Tom F, who promised payment. Wonder if he eventually came up with the funds to buy them all, I saw a lot of big ticket 45s in the boxes.

To be fair, Tom's reluctance / refusal to lower prices over time if items do not sell is religiously followed by many other sellers.
I've always asserted that if someone truly wants to sell collectible records, they should adjust the prices accordingly (most often, to lower them if the initial asking price is not achieved via auction or private sale). Otherwise, they are just hoarding, so why bother trying to sell in the first place?
He's doing a lot of discounting on ebay lately, for example on Original Sinners, East Coast Journeymen, Eastern Alliance and Cadaver.

looks like he has 10% discount turned on. Eastern Alliance is an odd example to cite, his $1259 pricetag, with 10% discount, is 4 times what a recent ebay copy sold for. i see Barry's book lists it at $300 as well...

Its a 600.00 record at most and thats what thomas paid for it,eastern alliance i mean.these people who overpay for his records have money to burn.i am sorry he is greedy but its 2 way street, people have to be willing to overpay or he wouldnt sell anything

Mike, he has been dropping at least 10% lately after a no-sale period, like for Original Sinners and Cadaver.

And I bought it!

That eastern alliance record is worth half of that maybe.funk only put a 10 percent discount on the records he sells because if sales tax on internet sales that each state charges now

Worth is what someone will pay for it at a particular time, with knowledge of the subject matter. I was a motivated buyer for my reasons at the time, just as I was recently with Blue Mist and two Hangmen of Fairfield County records. The price was secondary at best. I know about the $358 sale in May, but among other reasons, I didn't want to wait for another 7 years with no sales, as happened in that case.

Yes, one last week and one in late summer. I get nervous unless I have duplicates of a record I tried really hard to get for a long time, with the search probably consuming 200 hours or so. Quite a bit more for Blue Mist.

I agree with you that any record is worth what one is willing to pay for it and that's the way the market works. However...duplicates?? Non comprende....
No es bueno me thinks, sorry :(

Believe me, I'm not recommending this approach. Just chatting.
