Being a pauper or a skinflint, make your choice? Thought a thread for thrift finds (sure one already exists somewhere here) would give us a place to post the 25 cent to $1 dollar treasures that occasionally fall into our hands.

Living in West Virginia being an English immigrant and 1960's garage fiend is a lonely existence. Luckily I seem to be the only collector here so a lot of cool records seem to wait for me to arrive.

here is one for starters http://soundcloud.com/agentugly/stix-n-stones

Stix 'N' Stones - Sometimes Good Guys don't Wear White / All I Really Wanna Do.. on Impex 1225-541 .... Philli garage from 66/67?

Yes and more than one of copy.... 25 cents each... Goodwill, Summersville, WV.

Been a year or two since any of the actual thrifts in this area have produced any decent records... scuffed up Mexican Revolution lp on El Zarape with a funk cut or two was the last thrift record I found... and prior to that I can't even remember the last one.

Picked up a Genesis' 45 - A Winter's Tale, although not garage, it certainly got me big bucks when I snared an Oz copy for around $1. How much did I get for it? $400!

I have this 45, at first I thought there was lots of echo on the drums, nope the drummer is just terrible.

Yes the drummer has a errmm certain charm. The first band I played in, we were all beginners, the drummer had this same style and what another drummer said was he "plays the kit backwards"?

Anyone know where they maybe from, the changed line "my Dad was a dirty miner" makes want to believe W.V. Yes, I am crazy. I found 8 in the same thrift store.

After spending plenty of change on 45's with cool band names and nearly always ending up with horrible music, I invested ten cents on a one-sided acetate with no band name listed and the title "Look Out For Number One." This may be familiar to some readers as it was included within "G-45 Unwaxed."

In Spring 2008, I found two New Lime 45s, "Ain't Got No Soul" (the first pressing) and "The Perfect Girl", as well as the Glass Harp's "Where Did My World Come From?" for 50 cents each at a thrift store.

I've found several good records at a separate store in the past few years. Mostly LPs, like the Electric Prunes' eponymous LP, but a few good 45s like Protozoa and Half A World Away. At that same store, though they aren't garage LPs, I found the "Lodestone" LP, a 1981 private pressing, and a very rare NM jazz LP entitles "New Herd" by Toshiyuki Miyama and the New Herd. It's great if you like jazz/big band stuff, and is a so-called audiophile pressing. $1.50 for the LPs, and 50 cents each for the 45s.

The majority of my stereo equipment - four tape decks, a turntable, two sets of speakers, and a receiver - has come from church sales or thrift stores, and no single piece of equipment has cost me over $20. I've become a master of hunting on a budget.

If i ain't thrifted for a week I get itchy. I got a call for the local...lol 30 miles away secondhand record store " I got some 45's you may like". The 45's I may like became 3 - The Fabulous Wailers 45's on golden crest unplayed but the band photo labels have come unstuck. Any idea how to reattach them? Or just leave them! Also some great Rn'B Lonesome Sundown - I'm a Mojo Man and Rockabilly Danny Zella and the Zell Rocks - Wicked Ruby. Lots of instrumentals. nearly 40 45's for 50cents each. I felt so guilty I gave him all my cash $22. About 10 of them were crap. A good day for Budget Record buying. ..and a job interview for a job I want so bad.

I couldn't be arsed to spend time going through stacks of vinyl records probably scratched to death and full of dust...I'm vinyl all the way but I've never felt the need to be a thrift store record hustler....not that there's many (or any) left in Britain these days....

I've done well on the local thrift store front. Here is a partial list of 45s that I remember picking up:

Now that's what I'm talking about. Thrifting is all about synchronicity, luck or karma, more than who can bid highest, which can be a soulless capitalist occupation. Thrifting is a good indicator of a local scene historically, in someways, as can be seen by ratfinkies great geographical Californian finds, right down to the Mexican . Just think if left in those stores eventually they go to the big hole in the ground and are lost forever. I'd rather own a rescued scratchy G- copy at 50c than bid big on a $50 VG+ record that eventually I get out bid upon. Like I said I'm a cheapskate. I wish I had the funds these days to eBay a collection but my 45 hoarding addiction needs adding to.

Expo, I used to volunteer in a SCOPE in the UK valuing records. First dibs on a lot of decent stuff, I think I got the entire run of The Orchids 45's in a day. Yes sure dust and scratches are there but some people actually cared for their records before their relatives donated the treasure on their deaths. Car-booting anyone?

I find lots of good and/or valuable records at thrifts, but no rare garage stuff that I can recall off the top of my head. I was excited recently to score my first decent rockabilly 45 at a Goodwill: Tom Tall and His Tom Kats "Stack-A-Records" on Crest. The condition left something to be desired, but at 49 cents it's hard to complain.

Not many in the garage / rockabilly
I started collecting records in thrift stores, I was in high school, and all i found (most likely everything I missed in the early years!) was 70's 80's stuff like David bowie, Gang Of Four, Ramones, The Clash. And A lot and I mean a LOT of jazz that i paid like 50 cents. Have found almost if not the entire discography of The Rolling Stones, The Who PAul Revere, The Monkees etc..some 80's punk Minor Threat etc...Barry St John Lp on Fresa (Mexican pressing).
It's been a while since i've been thrifting, all has been fleas, online and fairs.
I need to go out and start thrifting so more!!

I see your point. That actually describes most record stores in my area rather than thrift stores; the brunt of the records at thrifts are LPs in decent condition at best.

I feel that way now, most of the records i found in thrifts are a G to VG-.
I used to have plenty of free time, I could spend hours scavenging thrifts.....now I'm lucky with an hour to spare.

I drove 50 miles to check out a "local" record store recently so desperate am I for a good source of vinyl but I find the place is empty of good secondhand or any decent new stuff, nah a pile of crap but the town (Nitro - Its name was selected by the United States government because of the establishment there, during World War I, of a large federal plant for the manufacture of explosives.) was full of antique malls, shit, I hit a mega supply of vinyl, my 2 year old was not happy with his $3 dollar toy car I bribed him with, he was, however, happy with Bo Diddleys first album (the kid loves some Bo), a copy of Velvet Undergrounds - What Goes On 45 on MGM ($100 value!), One Way Street - I See The Light on Paula ($150 value??) and a few small garage finds - Coastliners - Alright...... The thrift/antique stalls have more choice and I did not scratch the surface of the piles of wax, my boy could take no more.

What I am trying to say is here in rural WV thrifting is all I have, most the Record Shops within my 50 mile radius cater in Metal and New Country, their secondhand bins are filled with ghostly religious psychopathic families of inbreeds harmonizing for Jesus wearing matching garments and 70's kipper ties. Yes sure I thought about going there to stop the vinyl itch.

I see your point. That actually describes most record stores in my area rather than thrift stores; the brunt of the records at thrifts are LPs in decent condition at best.

Well, many local thrift stores have come and gone in the 37 years I've been thriftin'. I first picked up garage 45s there in 1980. At that time there was a lot of stuff from the '50's and '60's to be had. Since 2000 the pickings have been lean. I will never give up on thrift stores, however. I still furnish a goodly part of my wardrobe from my thrift store haunts. Thriftin' is in my genetic makeup.
