I wanted to upgrade my sound system in the kitchen, without spending too much. Also had to be compact and easy to move around, and a minimum of equipment, power cords and connections. I chose this setup, which consists of a Thorens TD-202 turntable, and a Marshall Woburn II amp (pity it's not a Fender!). To me it was reasonably priced (but to some it may be a bit pricey). I'm putting it up here in case anyone is looking for an easy-to-source solution to the same problem. The Thorens has a phono pre-amp built in, and a decent cartridge, and the Woburn II has its own amp. So you don't need any amplifiers at all. Just the two pieces, one supplied connecting lead and that's all. The sound quality is good, better than I expected for a mid-fi, out-of-the-box solution. Great bass especially. The Thorens has a perspex dust cover which I removed.
As a bonus, the Thorens has a USB connector as well. So you can record LPs and 45s directly to a computer with free software. I've done a test, and the results are surprisingly decent, considering the minimal setup.
