Ultimate '60s garage compilation series pipedream

I'm no fan of new gatefold sleeves and certainly not 45 box sets. They end up never getting played.

I would have enjoyed single lp heavy Stoughton tip-on sleeves if I'd had my way.

I've definitely seen tip-on gatefold jackets. And I know what you mean about these deluxe sets only occasionally getting played. I got The Beach Boys' Smile super-deluxe box set last year for Christmas and I still haven't worked my way through the whole thing. But with a G45 set I suspect I'd have the opposite problem. Besides, I like to ogle the labels up close. Not to mention the possibilities for company sleeve repros.

A CD or download voucher would be a nice bonus because frankly, 80% of my listening takes place on my subway commute to and from work every day. I don't mind taking the time to transfer my vinyl to a digital format, but if it's already done for me, so much the better.

With Bosshoss involved in this dream, I trust quality-control will be in good hands.

To the people opting for CDs here: Do you actually like the medium or the format? In the latter case, wouldnt a download-option suffice - either to go with the 2xLP-version I vastly prefer and/or from one of the more popular online-platforms?

*Flame proof vest on* - vinyl has bitten me too much to trust getting great (even just consistent) pressings these days. I was a vinyl buyer before cds hit, and by the time I switched over vinyl pressings were so sh*tty I didn't miss them. My favorite purchase was a Who GH lp that had a label that was in the grooves about 2" in from the center - I should have kept that one. Looking at sites that cater to current production vinyl, I'm leery of all the non-fill pressings that are slipping out, or arrive covered with lint/dirt/scuffs/warps straight from the plant.

As for downloads - unless I get full fidelity flacs and full artwork that will print cleanly, no thanks. I don't want anything compressed to Ipod levels so I can put 6 billion tunes on a mp3 type gizmo I don't/won't own anytime soon. The trend of the last 20 years towards maximzed volume levels to make a cd as loud as is humanly possible with no dynamic range is as bad, or worse, than sh*tty vinyl pressings. Drink coasters suck because of the size, and sound that's extremely dependent on proper mastering for acceptable fidelity when I play it on my stereo. That said, my space for music is constrained by family needs, and I have to take that into consideration with what I purchase.

I need to excavate under the main part of the house, pour a floor, frame and install drywall, run electric/install dedicated audio only wiring, install heat and A/C ductwork (whoops - need to get a larger furnace and A/C unit for the added space), lay carpet, get furniture - I'm sure the missus would give a thumbs up to spending mid 5 figures on a hideout for me. ;)

That would give me room for the Electro-Voice Georgian corner horns my dad built in the late 50s that are at my folks' house - of course, those would need crossover, midrange and tweeter upgrades, so tack on another $2000 or so to the tab...

The pipe dream is of course Single Boxes with well made/mastered repro 45's (with timy RE somewhere or such, to avoid frauds... ) + insert with info. The Orlyn 45 box - who would not get one of those? ;)

PS in our house it's the LP comps that don't really get played. The re 45's I have don't get as much play as originals... but I play'em more than LP's...

Btw CD is a dead format, isn't it? Tiny, boring, ugly and on it's way out. It's the 8-track of the 80's/90's but more plastic and less charm. Even the larger labels are beginning to release vinyl/download only.

The problem with 45 boxes is that they are very expensive and hard to sell.
I believe LP's (single or double) would be ideal.

That's why I write 'pipe dream' ;)

Indeed...

I'm with Mr. Segment: Reissues of 45s I dig are more of a reminder for something that I need to find an original of than something I spin often. Even the nicely done ones (Sloths, Bees, or these Last Laugh/Sing Sing KBD RE's) seem to radiate an artificial, errm, "aura" that's hard to explain. I dont have that with comps, maybe because they don't want to be more than they really are. So again: single- or double-LPs in old-school cardboard sleeves, pressed on pro-mastered virgin vinyl with color-label reproductions, liners using BHQS.10 (or whatever the 'state of the art' down in the bunker-basement has advanced to, until then) are what my pipe dream is made of.

Maybe it should be done like the Omnibus funk set x 22:

45 reproduction 45s in custom box with hardcover book, $250

I bought this box set for christmas and it's fabulous.

One of you guys should approach Numero and see if they'd be interested in doing a G1000 based 7" box.

The chances of getting clearance on every track in the top 100 is of course unlikely (A pity as BossHoss's idea of 4x25 7" box sets would be my personal pipedream)

A G45 from each state in the U.S.A and a hardback book whih features details on the other 950 45s

Also a nice Pipedream!

fully agree with that. Things done as "exact repro" but that's actually just "repros" per se make me sick. Either you get the real thing, either you get something different with its own identity. That's why I do hate "exact repros". I heartfully vote for a double LP format. If you manage to get it done with a capitol-like cardboard, this will the the Rolls in the comp universe.

I also have that kind of disgust with the idea of an exact repro. Exact in every way except for the shape of the groove which is completely and utterly different, and inferior.

It reminds me of something I did when I first started collecting 45s about 15 years ago. I didn't have enough company sleeves for all the records, so I decided to "repro" some company sleeves using a color photocopier. I made up a few dozen sleeves, thinking for a while how nice they looked. I made them even brighter than the faded original sleeves. After a few days it hit me - this compromised the authenticity of the records, cheapened them. So I threw the pretty fake sleeves in the bin, and never made another one. Instead I purchased a bunch of real sleeves from a dealer.

I think repro 45s also have that effect, when mixed into an authentic 45 collection. It's a sham, that rubs off on the whole collection.

maybe the g45 45 repros could be pressed in a square shape and housed in a round box, to give them an aura of subversiveness, if the purchaser wants an exact-o-repro they can clip to a circular shape themselves! two birds with one stone?

A double vinyl albums run, in a dream, should be released in reverse order please. Like track TBM/g45 - position 1000 should be track 1, side 1, vol 1, bringing the top g45 spin be last track on vol 40!!?? An eternal carrot teasing the listener.

I've got a couple of hundred repro's and boots but they're filed away in seperate boxes and are not filed amongst my originals. I got The Bees 'Voices Green and Purple' re-issue on Ugly Things and it's essential. Highly recommended.

I like the lp + cd concept like "The Fenton Story". The lp's for keepsakes and the cd's to play. And, I think it would be OK if you had to exclude but mention the tunes with a license problem. The set with all that you could use would still be way better than nothing at all. As always, it's fine with me to use LBB which is # 120 something in TBM. This would be the greatest series ever. Do it like a book club, one volume at a time. Anticipation for the first and all subsequent volumes of a continuing story would be high and financially more affordable. When signing up you would be obligated to purchase each volume as it's released. Something like having to buy at least one book per month. One big draw back to this method, though, would be postage.
