What is your 80 minutes worth ?

Chances are, I'm not alone when.... back in the 80's/90's, we'd fill up a 90 minute cassette tape with our favorites from various garage comp LP's (or singles, if we were lucky enough) . And then after several "best of" comps, we (or at least, I ) would attempt to make a "best of" of the "best Of's" to expose friends to.

This thread isn't about comparing or scrutinizing (I could be shamed - considering that my "80 mins worth" contains no Sonics, Elevator's or Kasuals etc..). What I'd like to know is...if you've made an 80 min cd comp for friends (or a 'best of' for yourself) what songs did you include?

I think it would interesting to see how many of our choices have unknowingly over-lapped .... and/or this might prompt some of us to check out some sounds that we have yet to hear.

If I was making a compilation as an intro to '60s garage for someone else, it would be very different to a compilation of my crème de la crème favourites; and that would be different again to what I would select if I was compiling a perfect listening CD. Which one were you after, and are you only allowed to select from records which you own?

I would agree 100% Personally, I'd enjoy reading about both (the comp we made for ourselves and that which we made for the unfamiliar friend).

As to my comp listing above, you could say that I sort of "cheated." I once had a... "my favorites" and also a "music for friends" comp (actually still have these) but with one night with little to do... I decided to combine the two ideas. It doesn't always work. For instance; I doubt that any friend is going to report back that their life was changed after hearing "Kare Takers - Have You Seen My Baby" but the lead guitar and drums, sure do it for me.

Sources? I'd much rather listen to and share a superior boss hoss flac, than my purchased source from a boulders/pebbles comp. In other words; to list only that which we own, could be a bit limiting. Also, if not for BBTD's great "This Side Up" compilation, I would have never heard " Sunshine Reigns - Acelia Dulfin."

Okay 13th Floor, if I'm going to be totally honest in making this theoretical CD...

I have made a few "intro to '60s punk" comps, and alway ended up hating them. I don't think they convinced anybody anyway: it was like casting pearls before swine; so I'll never do that again. I find it's hard to predict what others will like anyway, so it's best just to intro them to what you like.

I could just use my database to include the 28 top-rated tracks, but that would be "just too much", and could lead to neural meltdown. I prefer to maintain the sanctity of my top-rated songs and disperse them somewhat. Therefore the only thing left is to make a perfect (or near-perfect) listening comp.

To keep it realistic, however, there is still one further qualification to make: I would never mix sources; I tried it once and hated the result; therefore I keep my reissues / comps separate from my own original vinyl, and would keep g45 flacs in a separate category again. I'll compose my theoretical comp from my own 45s as that is the most fun, and the result sounds much better than a CD made from comps / reissues. I'll need to give it some thought though, and will post it below.

I've had a few friends that expressed "appreciation" in hearing previously un-heard 60's garage, but hmmmm.... no one has ever returned and asked for further recommendations. I'm now guessing that they were being polite and like you mentioned, I've probably also not convinced anyone new.

I guess that I sort figured that everyone else made cassettes (back in the day) comps and CDR's comps in the present. After reading your posting, it's easy to understand why a lot of people wouldn't - or would choose to compartmentalize.

Maybe the wide availability of mp3s on youtube, and the equally widespread practice of linking to them in facebook blogs, has saturated the interest in 60s garage for most casual, non-obsessed listeners.

A facebook blog with links can be seen as the equivalent of a freely distributed compilation.

Too few people care about quality anymore: the portable mp3 player come smartphone+earbuds generation has seen to that.

You can't really play Facebook links like a compilation, but I can imagine people's iTunes libraries consisting largely of songs ripped from youtube videos; infact...

Definitely. As you know a lot of them aren't videos, they are just mp3s with a picture of the record label or cover. With a bluetooth speaker attached to your computer, you can play them like a comp, the only difference being clicking a link between each track.

I'm not knocking it, I think its great. But many people who would have bought or traded comps in the past, do it via youtube/facebook now.

Having several hours to spend by myself and a computer I decided to give this a go for Southeast Asian 60s 45s. These tracks are all selected from 45s I own, which means plenty of great songs on LPs are excluded, as well as 45s I don’t own. I am currently away from my collection, so I am doing this from memory with the help of internet sources for checking. I know I have all these songs on the original release 45s except no. 25, which I know I have on LP, but am pretty sure I have on 45 as well. If not, I should have. Most of these songs have been comped (not all, I think) and most are also on youtube, but not all, at least I couldn’t find them all. I have alternated English language songs with Malay/Indonesian songs, except as noted. I am not sure what language ‘instrumental’ is?
