I'm sure it's just a coincidence, and it's not too similar really. The Masters wouldn't have heard the 5 Gentlemen and vice versa.

at best they could have heard Hedgehoppers Anonymous take on 5 Gentlemen/Darwin's Theory's "Daytime" that came out in Australia (the London Criers that covered it were also from Adelaide) but "Katioucha" was a most obscure song that never got any foreign release and like you said it's still quite different anyway.
