Another new sound system

I was wondering which 5 tracks to transfer, to test out the new SBT tape (which I installed today). If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great. Nothing that is already legitimately released from mastertapes, (or planned for legit mastertape release in the near future). Not that anyone is reading this anyway ('cept for us cranks).

Though I doubt it will appeal to many of the garage heads ‘round here, I’d love to hear the flip to the Pendelums on Spinx of them doing “Mickey’s Monkey.” I’d also love to hear better versions of the Psychotics “(I’m) Determined” and the Satyrs “Don’t Be Surprised” than what is currently available out there

Thanks for these, Mark, they sound great! The Jesters record has been a favorite of mine for a long time. Just recently, one of the band members was located and the band was pinned as being from Marion, North Carolina which is just down the road from me.

I noticed there’s no label pics in the Boss Bunker yet. I’d love to see those if you get the chance!

Neat to see they recorded it where I now reside. And they weren't too far from Asheville. I wonder if they ever played there.

And Mark, they sound great to my battered ears, through headphones.

I've been busy, but I will get to all the requests tomorrow. Meanwhile here's the first one, suggested by Mr. Pfft
For these transfers, I completely covered the entire tonearm with STB tape. It was a very difficult and delicate job, because I had to remove all the other lesser treatments first. I had to use a hairdryer to soften up the various tape coatings, before peeling them off. Nearly broke my fingers, but it was worth it.

lol what am I supposed to be listening for? the satyrs sounds the same as it does on my friends mix CD as well as my OG copy. I don't understand what the sonic improvement is. maybe I need to huff some of these fumes?

If you're entertaining any late requests, Mark...

Danny Burk & the Invaders - Ain't going nowhere (ARA)
Cats Meow - La la lu (Decca)
Chymes - He's not there anymore / Quite a reputation (Chattahoochie)
Crucibles - Beware of birds (Madtown)

The flexibility of the new tape is a major engineering improvement over the older models! TFT and older versions were relatively inflexible and brittle, especially if the temperature dropped below 23 deg. celsius. The flexibility of SBT will allow for more consistent coverage, which will undoubtedly yield better sonic results.

WOW! This latest batch of flacs have set a new standard for detail, smoothness, and a significantly lowered noise floor. Much appreciated Mark! I even found Mickey's Monkey tolerable! (and yes, I'm a "garage head").

Thanks Daniel! I usually know when there's a good improvement, because I want to listen to each track several times, over and over. That's the effect with this latest STB set. Especially noticing the dynamic range in the drums, especially toms and kick drum on some tracks. The Satyrs recording, well, there's just nothing there really to work with (as good as the song is!).

Oh man, thanks for these Mark! I was curious to see how the Satyrs would sound, given the low fidelity of the original recording. It was recorded in one take in a stereo shop in downtown Asheville, just using a reel to reel with no producer or overdubs. Even still, I would say this is a major improvement over the digital version I have. All of these recordings you have shared sound absolutely amazing to my ears.

As an enthusiast of Carolina garage, I'd love to hear these as well if you are still taking requests:

Sound System - Take A Look At Yourself
Sounds Unlimited - Cool One

Thanks, SJ! I will do your 2 requests, probably tomorrow after I have applied even more STB tape to some critical system infrastructure.

Here's the first of your request list Daniel. Theoretically, it should be a touch better than the last transfers, becausse I added a bit more STB. But I doubt if the difference will be apparent. I also noticed that my different Mac computers have radically different sound quality. Luckily, the best one is the one I use for the transfers. But the playback on the other 2 Macs is nowhere near as good as the playback on the transfer Mac. Admittedly, it is fully treated with STB :smyle:. Maybe that's the difference? Not maybe, definitely now that I think about it. But it's like a whole octave deeper in the bass! Beware Of Birds has subterranean bass (but only on the treated Mac).

Thanks, boss - these new transfers sound fantastic! If you're still taking requests, I would love to hear these 'not exactly BFTG material, but I like the shitty-sounding clips I've heard' titles:

Sonny Woy - New Lease On Life (Crossfire)
Opun Rodes - On Your String (Blast)
Pidgie - Back Where You Belong (In)
