After further investigation it seems that the Microsoft software techies were instructed to write the registration code for some of the recently published, better selling software products with a "one time only" registration key.

I had the same thing happen to me. No way was I going to pay Microsoft again for a product I already paid for.
I got OpenOffice for free , converted all my old MS documents & it works just fine.

Hi, gang,

A Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem progress report / pre-order info

I'm fielding quotes from several book printers. I have a set price in mind, based upon what I know / have experience in dealing with. I will tell you that book printers are very much the same as automobile salespeople. the more you know as a buyer, the more they play hardball, or simply ignore you (you business is not worth the hassle for their company).

That said, the print biz is HURTING, especially for those who print book as their main focus. You would think most companies would be willing to make a deal, but not so. This is one of the reasons why Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem will be a limited print run - don't ask how many, that all depends on the final, agreed upon unit price.

Once I decide on a printer sometime next week, the book can be printed.

I've been asked about pre-orders, so I'll make an offer to G45 forum members only. Please, do not go blabbing or announcing that the book is available for pre-ordering on social media or other websites. I will issue a formal, "Ready for Purchase" announcement when the books arrive from the printer.

You may pre-order Beyond TeenBeat Mayhem if the following stipulations apply:

You are an active G45 forum member already (someone who posts);

You don't mind a short wait of up to 3 to 4 weeks at most [and don't bug / ask me "The book ready to mail yet?" queries. Impatient types are advised to wait and order later];

You are a U.S. resident (sorry, no non-U.S overseas pre-orders accepted -postage costs have to be determined, the U.S. overeas rates are are high enough as it is without being able to calculate precise specs. Don't worry though, the cost will be a lot cheaper than the $37.50 they now charge to ship one copy of TeenBeat Mayhem! overseas);

You must pay by mail order - send a check or money order in the mail
[Absolutely NO postal money orders!!! Those will be uncashed & returned to sender. The U.S post office is a pain in the rear to deal with when cashing in postal MO's; more than half the time they do not have the money in the clerk's cash register drawer to cover the postal MO to be cashed. I often have to make several trips, sometimes to different regional post offices in my area, wait in long lines, only to be told no one has enough cash in their register to cover the MO - most people pay for mailings by a credit or debit card nowadays.
I'm done with their headaches].

One book per customer at this time. If you desire more than one book, wait until the annoucement is made to order, and order another copy at that time.

Sorry about the rules, but this is how I gotta roll for now!

I think most everyone will be happy with the new book, that is, if you are a fanatical collector, avid listener, or have a major interest for the sounds. It's a record geek's dream, with plenty of information to supplement your copy of TBM. A few informative suggestions have been implemented in Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem, thanks to feedback posted on G45.
Needless to say, the new book is not a replacement for TBM; you will always need to keep your copy of TBM first and foremost.

This post might be a little late; however; I would like commend you for your leadership in getting TBM together and also kudos to all who provided information. I just stumbled across TBM a few weeks ago and have had my copy for about a week. Needless to day I have some questions about some of the details and may even be able to offer some answers. I grew up in Mississippi booked a number of the southern garage bands in the mid-sixties.....in high school and then at Ole Miss. I have been working on additions questions/corrections about which I have first hand knowledge and questions about some of the bands attributed to Mississippi who I don't recall being around at the time. I am not saying they were not....I would just like a little more information......maybe that will show up in the supplement. I guess I should mention a few things here.....
Joe Frank (Carollo) and the Knights (of Leland) were from Leland,MS just east of Meridian. Besides seeing them perform a number of times, I worked with Joe Frank's uncle in the early '70s. I don't recall seeing anything in your book about him being the Joe Frank of Hamilton, Joe Frank and Reynolds.

Six Soul Survivors on RAP. Paul Davis was the lead singer and personel included Frank Morris, Donnie Kittrell, Gary Knight and maybe another whose name escapes me for the moment. We were all in the Meridian High School Class of 1967. To my knowledge, they were the only group on the RAP label to have a picture sleeve. I have a copy I would be glad to scan and send to if you wish. Paul Davis left the group and became a big name for Bang Records.

You list Farmer John by the Magnificent 7.....but don't foot note the fact that a couple of them wrote Let Love Come Between Us and had it out on Columbia as The Rubber Band.....later becoming a hit for James and Bobby Purify. Townsend and Sanford went on to become the Sanford/Townsend Band and Johnny Wyker had the hit Motorcycle Mama as Sailcat. These guys were our favorite band in Meridian 1966-67 and they played there enough for many of us to become friends. My Copy of Farmer John came from their passing our copies at the end of one of their shows.

I recall seeing Tim Whitsett mentioned as being a producer/studio musician......but nothing about his fabulous Imperial Show Band. Besides having a great band (that made some records).....he should be recognized as having the first integrated garage/rock n roll band in Mississippi when he had Tommy Tate and Dorothy Moore as members of the group. I have a copy of Stand By Me done by Tommy Tate/Tim Whitsett's Imperial Showband.

We also booked the Preachers, Rockin' Gibralters, Muscle Shoals song writer and producer, Dan Penn and the Pallbearers who we doing one-nighters out of an old hearse, The Tropics, The Greek fountains, Basement Wall, the Alman Joys, Randy & the Radiants, the Gentrys (what a disappointment....they knew one song and were much too commercial and much too "white" for our crowd........ etc. etc.

I will stop now and send you more stuff to your email address.

P.S. And what about the Premiers (who also did Farmer John). They never played for us; however; their obscure mostly instrumental 'Well, Yeah" was a must play be every band that played in our area. It was a standard almost reaching the legendary status of Double Shot.....as a frantic "well yeah" became Hell Yeah. Took me 50 years to find a copy of the record......did not know the actual title. Speaking of Double Shot, the first time I heard it the Magnificent 7 played it at a dance in Meridian....everybody went nuts. The second time I heard it was on the juke box at the Hang Out in Gulf Shores and it did not show up on the radio until a few months later by the Swinging Medallions.

Thanks for your information, Keno!

I can hopefully answer your queries in brief fashion...

First, my next book has not gone to print just yet. I had to re-purchase the same program that ran perfectly fine before my system crash in order to be able to continue proofing prior to sending it to the printer. Just getting my laptop PC up and running again took a lot of time and effort, but, I did it myself without having to call on and spend money for an expert.

The groups you mention that are not listen in TeenBeat Mayhem! were not omitted by accident or oversight. Their 45s do not have the sound, as described in the book. I won't go into it here, but those groups (like Tim Whitsett & the Imperials) are generally thought of and collected as blue-eyed r&b / soul bands, all with brass / horn sections. Should one of those groups have recorded a record that sounded completely different than that (say, a Rolling Stones / Kinks / Paul Revere & The Raiders sound-a-like without any horns , etc,) then I would have slotted the group in the book, solely based upon that one song or 45. Thus, many southern groups are not listed. The Six Soul Survivors fall into this category. They were certainly a lot popular than the nearly all of the other Rap label groups, but the book isn't / wasn't done to commemorate every single recording group all over the USA. It could never have been done. Anyhow, everything regarding what is listed and what is not is explained in detail in the book, which you will discover once you have time to read the individual chapters.

I did interview a handful of folks in Mississippi, some directly / in-person when I was traveling around the southern USA during the mid 1990s. In those days, there was no internet and any contacts that came about were made by word of mouth and old fashioned digging thru microfilm / newsprint / magazines, and the white pages phone directory. Unless you happened to be doing that sort of research work 20 years ago, you have no idea how labor intensive and difficult it was to even reach the person you were searching for. today, you can find anyone in minutes, if not seconds!

The Magnificent Seven entry - There was no room / page space to add the post recording info regarding the Rubber Band; that is why follow-up annotation is absent.

The Premiers who recorded "Are You Alright" (Well Yeah) are not the San Gabriel, California Premiers. I'm not sure of the locale but the 45 was out in early 1962 on the NYC based Big Top record label, so it could not be listed in my book if it qualified / merited an entry - too early on the timeline of events.

Mike.....

Thanks for taking the time to address my questions. Now I have a better understanding of how you sliced and diced the gillion aspiring rock bands. It appears to me (from my own personal experience) that a large number of southerners preferred what you and others call blue eyed soul....to me soul is soul black or white. I don't recall ever hearing that term until the Righteous Brothers came along...then not really understanding how the description fit them. I do like and collect the Beatles/Stones/Animals inspired local bands along with the groups with a couple of saxes and a B-3 with a Leslie! Growing up listening to and preferring black radio stations had a great influence on me and a bunch of other folks. I will be getting you a check for the book update this week. Thanks again for all of the hard work and the info y'all share.....and thanks for setting me straight on the Premiers!

Thanks to everyone who sent in a pre-order, your books will be processed and shipped first.
There is still time to pre-order a copy if you reside in the USA, $40 includes postage, check or bank money order only - payable to / sent to

I am not printing many copes, probably 400 at most, maybe even less. There is the chance that I might reprint if the book sells out quickly by the time of the holiday season, but, don't bet on it.

I'll announce the official release as soon as i have the books from the printer. Files for the book cover and for the inside text will be ready to send to my printer by the end of this week. Once I have the actual printed book, I can determine the most economical method for shipments overseas (Europe, Australia) and for Canada customer orders. This is the reason why I can't allow preorders for non U.S. residents.
Based upon best estimates, I'd venture that the book will cost around $16-18 to ship overseas. But that may change slightly, based on packaging and the book weight which is not official til it is printed.

It is a softcover book which will make it more cost efficient for shipping.
Shipping in the US will be via 1st class mail.

The only place to order will be on my website www.pricelessinfopress.com (it is being updated to accomodate the new book)
Or, through the Ugly Things webstore on their website.
Paypal will be accepted on both websites.
Since the book is a limited print run, there will be no other distribution outlets.

I'm also going to offer a deal on the purchase of Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem with Teenbeat Mayhem!, if you never got around to buying a copy of the former - or desire a second copy, etc). It will only be available through the Ugly Things website. The postage costs will be a bit pricey for both books in one package headed overseas, but the special offer combined price should make up for the gouging of the wallet by the U.S. postal service.

Absolutely NO postal money orders!!! Those will be uncashed & returned to sender. Postal money orders can be deposited/cashed at any bank just like any other money order or check. You need to go to a post office to have one issued, but you absolutely don't need to go one to turn it back into real money.

Will this pre-order opportunity be available at the end of the week?

Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem is at the printer - passed the pre-flight stage (technical thorough check). I am awaiting delivery of a hard-copy proof which should arrive on Mon / Tues of next week. Once the printed proof is OK'd, printing will commence. I know there will be a few typos and spelling gaffs that I could not correct after my MS Office program crashed and failed to reinstall. Subsequent replacement freeware programs were able to open the file, butr formatting went all to hell, so rather than struggle with re-doing everything, i just opted to go with the last saved pdf file - thankfully everything I needed to include was done by then.

300 copies are being printed, still time to pre-order if you reside in the USA, as mentioned. Thanks to all who sent in for a pre-order.

The proof copy of BTBM arrived today.
Everything looks and reads as it should on my quick flip through.
Won't be long now til the finished books are here, end of next week seems to be the time frame according to my printer.
I'll be able to calculate a weight and shipping costs for overseas / non-U.S. customers and then I can set up a payment option for everyone by the time the books are ready to ship.

Just received word from my printer that the completion date for Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem
is October 8. Guess they are busy or pushed my small sized print run to the end of the line!
Pre-orders are still available if you wanna get your books as soon as they arrive.

The books just arrived.

Nice, thick, durable softcover for repeated flipping back and forth. The pages won't fall out!

I'm currently packing up all of the pre-orders; thanks to everybody who sent or gave me payment in person.
All pre-orders will go out tomorrow, today is a holiday here in the USA. Expect your books to arrive next week in da mail.

I'll make the official announcement here tomorrow, for everyone who wants a copy. By then, I will know precise mailing weights and postage costs. The USPS is quite fickle when it comes to postage rates, can be as much as a $2 difference per ounce regarding overseas mailings.

Just want to explain that I am using rigid / stay-flat mailers for shipping the book. for Canada / worldwide shipping, according to the US postal service, the shipment type must be charged at the rate for First class international package, and not the rate for the mailer envelope - since the package cannot be machined (too rigid) the cost to mail it is a little more ($3-5 range) than it would be if sent in a paper envelope with no protection. I wouldn't want my book arriving with a bent or creased cover!
