Beyond TeenBeat Mayhem

I do not have any distribution deals because the book is a limited print run, so no wholesale or consignment sales.

The book is only available directly from me with paypal, or in the Ugly Things webstore (also with paypal).

Do you have a friend who can pay for you, or someone else who wants a copy? Shipping two books in the same box is not too costly.

If not, you would have to mail a money order payable on a U.S. Bank, which is probably a real pain in the rear-end nowadays to do...Or you can mail me a "fake 45rpm" , put a crappy 45 in a mailer box along with US dollars...but you'd have to get American currency.

Hi all,

Hope you don't mind me joining this forum, but I just wanted to offer a massive well done to Mike for his two Teenbeat Mayhem works. Clearly labours of love and both have been well thumbed here already. More importantly for me, the garage-o-meter has helped me to identify and sample yet more amazing sounds for my collection which has stepped up greatly since buying both books. Thanks Mike, I have so much more great stuff to listen to now.

I fear that I am a mere novice compared to other contributors here, as I do not have the funds or contacts to get me hands on many original 45s, and get most of my tracks via compilations. What I do have though is a real love for this music and have had for many years now. This can be a bit of a solitary interest here in England (though apparently there are a few fanatics - I just never seem to run into them!).

I have a couple of queries regarding entries in the books though and I would really appreciate some info if anyone here can help.

I have catalogued my tracks by title, band and source and I thought it would be fun to cross reference to the Beyond TBM countdown of 15,000 tracks as voted on by TBM contributors. This took a while but I am now nearly there except for three entries. Can anyone shed any light on the following:

1. I have "I Don't Need You" by the Royal Coachmen and although the track is listed under the band entry in TBM, they no longer appear under the song title list in BTBM. I also scanned through all the '5' ratings in the full 15,000 list and could not see them. Did I miss something in the update, e.g. a name change on the original recording, or has this entry been left out since TBM? If anyone knows at what number they should appear on the final list, or why they have been dropped if this is the case, please could they let me know.

2. I have the same thing as above for Sweet Smoke and "Morning Dew". The track is listed under the band entry in TBM, but they no longer appear under the song title list in BTBM. I scanned all the '4' ratings in the full 15,000 list and could not see them. Any info on what number they should be (or why they are no longer there if applicable) would be much appreciated.

3. "Plastic People" by Wildwood is showing in the BTBM song list as scoring 4.666 but I have been up and down the '4' ratings several times and cannot find it. This may mean that I am going 'BTBM-blind', spending too long on this little project, but I am sure it is not there. Again, if anyone can help and let me know what number this should be on the top 15,000 list I would appreciate it.

I can then finish my own database of tracks.

Anyway, well done again Mike, these two books are indispensable.

Happy New Year all!

Best,

MickWoo.

Thanks for the feedback, MickWoo.

I can help you out:

Royal Coachmen - it is listed, but for an oversight error, "I Don't Need You" is credited in the songtitle listing as the Rogues (CA), and within the top 15,000+ listing - see #5149

Wildwood - This was an oversight, it is in my master listing but it wasn't included in the printed book top 15,000
Since there are more songs that have surfaced since publication of BTBM, the Top 15,000+ listing will be updated on-line in the near future.

Sweet Smoke - "Morning Dew"- I see it shows a 4 in TBM so I went back to look at the ratings breakdown, and I have none. This means the song was not rated at the time, and needs to be tossed into the batch of yet to be rated tracks. I thought we had caught some of those number ratings in TBM, the ones where you see a number but no description. That usually identified a layout error.

As mentioned in BTBM, updates and corrections will be posted online as soon as I have enough of them, and time to create the page, probably via a tie in with G45.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the fast response. That explains all, I'll look out for updates on this site.

Can I just clarify something, I take it Royal Coachmen is the correct name for the band?

If so, if their place is #5149 on the list, does that mean the Rogues (CA) shouldn't be on there at all, or is there a band of that name who also did a track called "I Don't Need You" but should be at a completely different number in the listing?

I do have another couple of questions I am dying to ask that maybe you or another G45 member could answer:

1. The 'unknown band' on the Eva compilation 'Louisiana Punk Groups from the Sixties (vol. 1)' has since been identified as The Mersey Sounds and one of the tracks as "The Train". The other is called "Down Home Girl" but this is not listed as a single by them anywhere. Is it an unissued acetate or reel, or is it credited under another name? Can anyone shed any light?

2. I love the two Evil tracks that were recently released as a 7", "From A Curbstone" and "Short Life". Was the reason that these were not in TBM or Beyond TBM because they were found on a reel rather than on acetate? Again, I would be interested to find out.

In the meantime, thanks for the update, much appreciated.

Best,

MickWoo.

The Rogues (CA) "I Don't Need You" is a mistake, it should show in BTBM as the Royal Coachmen.
It is #5149 on the Top 15000 list
There is no Rogues group from California that recorded "i Don't Need You".
The Rogues from Louisiana recorded "I Don't Need You" on the La Louisianne label, it scores at 8.1

I'll have to listen to "Down Home Girl" again. I'm unaware of a released source.

Those two Evil tracks were sourced from a reel to reel tape that was thought to be lost forever. "I'm Movin
On" was also found on a reel, but prior to the reel being located, the only surviving format for "I'm Movin On" was an acetate disc. That is why the song was rated for TBM. At the time I did not want to allow "tape only" tunes to be included, but with some afterthought of recent weeks, I am considering inclusion of these "tape only" songs, if folks agree. They would be rated just like all the released 45s and acetate versions. I have to get a list together of all the tape only TBM-worthy tracks. I'm perpetually insane, I know...

I'd love to see reel-only tracks included...but I imagine the pool would be endless.

Hi Mike,

Again, thanks for the info and the quick response. It would be great to add in tape-only tracks but I can only imagine the amount of work that would entail on top of what you've already done!

Look forward to any online updates you do get to though, it will be great if you get time to keep the whole TBM project living and breathing here.

Best,

Mick.

Hi Mike,

I was talking to you on the 3rd Jan and just after regarding a couple of anomalies I had found whilst cataloguing my own collection and cross referencing it to the Beyond TBM countdown of top 15,000 tracks.

I hope this post is useful rather than a pain in the proverbial, but I think I have found another one whilst entering the latest 'Last of the Garage Punk Unknowns' on my database.

The original TBM shows the Symbols as having released 'Give Me Time' and it is scored as a 5. I looked for the title in BTBM and the only entry is for the Mersey Men scoring 5.2. I also can't see it by the Symbols on the top 15,000 list.

As with the others I mentioned in Jan, hopefully you can assign a placing once you do the next update.

Hope all is well, still finding both books utterly indispensable!

Best,

MickWoo.

I think if you do that you should consider listing the ones that are on any format like the 10inch or 12 inch acetates as well.

Sorry for the late reply.

I went to check my running master list of all songs and, sure enough, the Symbols "Give Me Time" was rated and ranked, but it was printed as an uncorrected title error that I somehow missed.

#2601 in the top 15,000 + is listed as "She Gives Me Time" by the Symbols. Obviously, that title is incorrect.
It is also listed incorrectly in the alpha-ordered songtitle listing.

"Give Me Time" rates at 5.8.

I was told by the seller that the actual label of the Surfers in Dome records even though no label is show. Can anyone confirm or prove otherwise?

The DR prefix is the account for custom client vanity pressings recorded at Dove Recording Studios in Minnesota.

Since there is no official label name designation printed on the label itself, discographers classify this as a No label name pressing.

It would have been issued on Dove records if the people involved at the studio

A - Thought the record was good enough to put on the studio's label,
B - the person who contracted the recording session had the option to pay more money to have it issued on Dove but may or may not have been presented with that option.

Hi All,
I just recently managed to get a copy soundfile of my last missing track from the original TBM 1000 list - big thanks to the fine guy from the 'Beyond the Beat Generation* Internet Radio.
The track is #968 Talismen - I got rid of you. I was really happy to listen to it and I like it alot even thanks to BTBM we know now it is from a Canadian Group from Sarnia, Ontario (1966).

In BTBM I found 4 new tracks in the 1000 list and that leads to one question/request.

I am looking for any further Information on track #947 - Unknown Group - 'I'm Dissatisfied'.
It would be very nice if somebody could share more informationas
- can I find it somewhere - is it available on a public or private comp?
- in best case can somebody offer a mp3-soundfile - no matter what quality.

Thank you all for sharing Information.

Best wishes
guehart

I think I found another error on the Restless Men on RM. First book show a rating of 5, but the second shows the breakdown of 4.2 which by the numbers given is correct.

Thanks to all who purchased a copy of the book.
I now only have three copies remaining for purchase of Beyond Teenbeat Mayhem.
it will not be reprinted. TBM also will not be reprinted, or revised via an updated edition.
Just too costly to print & ship books nowadays.

I just noticed that a lot of spelling /punctuation errors have been introduced into the listing-by-ratings section which were not present in TBM. This suggests to me that you never had the data stored in an information retrieval system, as the data has obviously been entirely retyped! - and seemingly from memory!!
