The gold rush to get rights to old recordings has been going on for a few years. Someone(s) had the bright idea to secure the rights, and then turn around and pitch them to the hipster generation to include in films, videos, video games, CD comps, samples, etc. Just today at the 'Siren' coffee shop I saw a comp of 'psychedelic soul' that included "Mr Kidneys" by OFS Ltd, a mediocre funk record that was originally on the Prix label from Columbus OH and had been part of a comp by the Numero group. This was alongside songs by the Temptations, Supremes, Jackson Five, Shuggie Otis, etc. There are 100s of better songs that could have been replaced the OFS Ltd but through various mechanations it happened. Numero and other labels have been on this, that is a major reason these operations secure stuff and reissue comps, they are trying to generate some interest and cash in on the future potential song placements. It's not clear how any of the artists benefit in this - some do, some don't, depends on who is still living and accessable, and the legal rights.
