Happy Snaps

Just a reminder to anyone who would like to receive the keys to the label photo bunker :

Please send me a PM indicating your desire to receive the password. I need to send you the password in a private message, I can't post it here on the open forum. I think there may be a few people who would like access who have not actually sent a private message yet. I sent out the access password already via return private message to everyone who requested it so far. The bunker contains only the letter "A" so far (without label titles at this stage), but more letters are almost ready.

Lots of members have offered to re-name a letter, or two (or even three). I really appreciate it, and just the offer to try is very welcome. If you try and the technical side proves too difficult, no problem. And I also understand if it's just not possible to contribute time for any reason. You're still more than welcome to apply for the password.

I am uploading the photo files letter by letter. Letter "A" is done, letter "B" will be delayed and maybe letter "C" as well. Letters "D" and "E" will be up later today. The job is taking me longer than I thought, since I'm re-doing some letters due to dust, and now I'm dusting off each 45, and taking more care with each shot.

It's a bit complex but here's how to handle the situation if you're helping with the re-naming :
You can download all the photos for all the letters at any time if you want to. Or you can wait until all the photos have been re-named and then download the whole lot. If you download before re-naming, it's not necessary for you to re-name any letters other than the one you have offered to re-name. You can get the re-named files later when they are done. Each letter will be in its own folder (such as "USA-A", and "USA-A renamed")

I will send (via private message) detailed instructions for access to the files and for FTP (File Transfer Protocol). With FTP you can send entire folders full of multiple files to the G45central server, and you can also download entire folders. Without FTP you have to click to download each photo file individually. So setting up FTP early could save you a lot of time in the long run. I always use FTP for uploading and downloading files, but it's slightly tricky to set up and use if you've never used it before. With my instructions it should be easy, especially if you use the free program FileZilla (Client) which is what I use.

If anyone knows an easier way than FTP to send multiple files to me, that might help some people. I'm not up-to-the-minute with the latest or easiest methods (Dropbox?). Obviously attached to an email is not possible because there are hundreds of files for each letter.

WeTransfer is great for files up to 2 GB.

PlusTransfer can handle 5 GB.

The letter "E" folder was around 1 GB in size.

Please send me the password Boss. Bunkers are suddenly back in style!

Yes, you can use FTP programs like Filezilla (Mark taught me how to use it). With this program, after you write username and password, you can access to the G45Central server where there are all the folders that contain the photos and you can select and download them all.

Daniel's black background scans look great, but the official a-z set should remain as they are for the re-naming project. Afterwards, anyone is obviously free to alter their own set as they please.

I wasn't going to do it for the uploads - it would take forever! It's just for my personal use. Reading it again, I realised that my comment was misleading.

I have sent everyone instructions for using FTP (File Transfer Protocol) to download the photos, including instructions for obtaining a free FTP program. You don't have to use FTP, but it's a lot quicker because you can download entire folders instead of clicking on every photo file to download each one. The instructions have been successfully tested by several members. The only problem was with an outdated version of the FTP program, so please make sure to download the current version.

Technical help for anyone experiencing problems logging into the G45central server with FTP using my instructions :

If you get a "500 AUTH" error, it's almost certainly because you are using the wrong Encryption option.
You are probably trying to connect with "Use Explicit TLS over FTP". You need to change the Encryption option to "Use Explicit TLS over FTP if available". The "if available" part is essential, because Explicit TLS is not available on the G45Central server. If you have an older version of FileZilla, it is possible that you do not have the option "Use Explicit TLS over FTP if available". In that case, it would be necessary to download and install the current version of FileZilla Client.

ShyC developed a custom program to reduce the file size of all the label photos to around 20 percent of the original size. I used it tonight, and I have checked out the quality very carefully and there is little or no visual difference. The files will take a lot less time to download from now on, starting with the letter "F". I will also run the downsize program on the A,D and E folders tomorrow, to reduce them as well. If you haven't downloaded them yet, best wait and get the "reduced" version files which are a lot faster to download, and easier to store.

Letters B and C still have to be re-done completely.
