It seems to be pretty much the belief (and count me in as well) that horns have destroyed many a good mid to late 60's song. I was listening to a song today and reminded that there can be an exception to the rule (at least to my ears). The song was "A Memory" by Thor's Hammer. I'm also not terribly bothered by the horns in "Love's A Fire" either. If I heard either song while in my 20's or younger, I might not be as tolerant. Who knows...
It's likely that in a lot of cases, horns were not the idea of the band to begin with, but added afterward.

I'm sure there are many cases when we can think of a song where horns just killed it ("killed" in a bad way).

My question is: Are there any songs where you consider a horn as an actual asset?

Saxophone - not horns.
There are plenty of examples of great tunes with a sax involved, like "Try And Find". Not to mention scores of great trax by the Sonics.

Trumpets are an entirely different ruination, in most cases. I don't mind them in "She's Gone" by the Oceans. They don't bug me; the tune achieved a good rating in TBM.

However, a "Herb Alpert mouth weenie" (thanks, Billy Miller, RIP!) kills the vibe completely on "Crying All Alone" by the Avengers.
