How Unknown Can You Go?

My entrees were:-

The Townsmen - You Left Me Crying - Albun
The Townsmen - Friends - Albun
The Envoys - Ain't Nobody... Evangelical
Glass Menagerie - Baby - Magnetic Studio Corporation
The Renegades - Temptation - mp3 of a demo record a guy I met last month played me :yup:.

recorded in Hollywood CA in April of 1963 by the Renegades also known as the Tempters a band out of the Santa Barbara CA area. We signed a contract of Temptation with a record company that never progressed as the band was done when we all went our separate ways the following year.

Lead guitar by Craig Medlen, Rhythm by Pete Sternloff and drummer Ron Bryan,

The bands was done means a couple of the members got drafted.

To wrap up my unofficial entries

These 4 are by The Pharaohs, taken from 2 master tapes containing a total of 6 songs by the group. The names of the songs are "Rich To Rags", "Since You've Been Gone", "I Knew You Lied", and an un-named instrumental which I call "The Mummy", which seems to fit.

That about wraps it up

Damn, Mark. THANKS FOR SHARING.

Congrats to the winner!! My one ''unknown'' that i placed in the competition was: "Love is" by Care on Green Front.

My acetates I submitted last year never got rated, so I anyone can remember them and cares to give them a rating I would appreciate it.

ANNOUNCEMENT

The winner has selected a prize without enquiring as to condition.

CONGRATULATIONS, JOEY!

Here's my idea for the next competition

I'll put it out to get some feedback, before deciding.

Each contestant would create a THEMED COMPILATION LP of 14 tracks (7 songs per side), and post links to the songs here on the forum. The THEME can be anything at all, such as songs with female singers, 45s with red labels, songs from a particular country or state, songs that should have been on BFTG but missed out, songs mentioning LSD, songs not in TBM, 45s available for under $10 etc. etc. The only limit is your imagination.

The songs do not have to be unknowns. They can be common, or rare. You don't have to own the original 45s. The links can be hosted anywhere, including youtube. However, contestants will be scored (by popular vote) on 2 factors

1 - The quality of the THEME, including the theme concept, the LP title and the execution (score out of 10)
2 - The quality of the MUSIC (overall score out of 10)

At this stage, any ideas for changing the rules of the contest are welcome and will be considered. A new thread will be created for the new competition.

What can I say...I'm easy...I figured if Mark owns it, it's gotta be in pretty decent condition. Once again, thanks a million Mark, you are the true winner around here.:tiphat:

Outside, would you be so kind to unveil the ID of the trax you posted (1 ÷ 6, including the 2 test samples; just for my private archive) ? thx in advance

I think that is a great idea. But if I could offer one piece of feedback on this, please make your compilation a mix so it appears as a full cd/lp. I know I am not going to click on 14 YouTube clips to get an overall feel of the concept. Nor one divshare link after another, 14 in a row.

I agree with that, except in the case where someone is technically unable to make a mix. In that case, they could just present 14 youtube/divshare links, but their "Theme" score component would probably suffer unless it was a great theme.

I also imagine 3 stages for the competition, over a 5 week period

Stage 1 (one week) - Decide on your theme and announce it
Stage 2 (two weeks) - Create your theme comp LP and post the link(s)
Stage 3 (two weeks) - Listen to all the entries and score them

Agreed with this. Perhaps a zip/rar file hosted on Mediafire, Zippyshare or another such site would be the best option - 14 songs shouldn't take terribly long to upload or download.

Including unknown bands in a How-Unknown-Can-You-Go competition is akin to setting exam questions that you don't know the answer to.:p Thanks for the info by the way - great stuff!

How about a prize where you have to choose between a nice $100 record or a sealed mystery suitcase, and the suitcase could contain either an original copy of The Vikings on Wam, or a petrified dog turd?

I would choose the suitcase, because I'm pretty certain that when it came down to it you would feel bad about sending a dog turd and would send the Vikings instead.
