Kicks #8

An "old-time ground floor" fanzine/magazine addict's take (reasoning included):
1) Kicks - Pure rock & roll evangelism (with no hippies allowed!)
2) Ugly Things - The best writers and research on the planet (w/only "cool" hippies included)
3) Who Put The Bomp - Ground zero, and the benchmark for all (with a sincere love of the music)
4) Black To Comm - Punk rock journalism at its very best
5) Future - The wild wacky world of 'true believer' Greg Prevost (killer humor and interviews)
6) Discoveries - Some of the best writers and columnists...and killer ads always!
7) Mojo/Shindig - For the photos alone!
8) New York Rocker - Full and astute coverage of NYC punk scene (and its diaspora)
9) Bam Balam - The best of the U.K. mags...featuring all my favourites (w/full and astute 'Paisley Underground' coverage)
10) Insert your friend's cool fanzine here (I chose Pyg Track...Colin Hill's U.K. Blue Cheer fanboy microzine)
Honourable mention: Records - Little magazine showcasing the warped record collector mind of Chris Peake (savant-land)

The Rock Marketplace is the one that got me started collecting w/ intent. Alan Betrock came into the record store I was working at Spring 1973 with the first issue. That was my Road to Damascus moment... Took another thirty years to score a set of its precursor JAMZ.

UK based FORMAT produced , as best as I am able to determine, either 9 ,10 or 11 issues from 1982 - 1986, well at any rate the final issue I know of is #12. Issue #2/3 was noted as a "double" issue. Though as I am shy #'s 4 -5 perhaps this was also a "double" issue? Published by a real character named John Wagstaff this very worthwhile and extremely dense mag presented an extraordinarily wide ranging overview of content with an emphasis on UK & European sixties obscurities. Tons of obscure sleeve pics was a particularly welcome feature. A true labor of frenetic intent FORMAT's legacy stands as a treasure trove of ephemeratical obscurotreasuros...

Trouser Press pretty much picked up where TRM left off circa late 1974. During the mid 70's it was required reading. The buy / sell section was an essential resource for collecting during mid / late 70's. Reviewing the want and for sale ads of yore nowadays provides a sobering overview of inflations impact...
