Kim Fowley RIP

WOW, What a drag. Just recently Neil Norman used a unpublished photo I had of Kim in the SEEDS documentary. As you were listing this, Alec Palao called me to tell me he had died.:(
 
Had a few interactions with him, unforgettable stuff. I have no doubt he would be able to talk for hours under water if his phone calls were anything to go by.. Cliche to say, but truer words can't be said, there will never be another like him again...r.i.p
 
A friend sent this link to me today. I'm not on social media, but I can imagine the man's defenders will dismiss or ignore the claims of the woman (Jackie Fuchs, aka Jackie Fox) who as as the bass player for The Runaways was drugged and raped by Fowley in front of his "followers" after a New Years Eve gig, in a dumpy motel, forever traumatizing the victim. And, before you make a judgement, I can say this - if you have never met someone who shamefully admitted to being traumatized as an under-age kid - or even as an adult, well, you cannot understand how one's life is forever altered.

Jackie had just turned 16. Fowley's age was around 35-36.

I'm sure I'm in the minority - I never liked Fowley as a human being; he was a manipulative, philandering creep, a sexual pedophile who was more full of shit than farmland fertilized with cow manure. A pompous ass who easily mesmerized other people with his tales of outrageous behavior - people, including friends of mine who still can't see thru the fog Fowley vented. He was no different than Huey Meaux or other men who had control and influence in the entertainment industry and used it to satisfy their own perversions under threats and blackmail.

People vilify guys lie Ted Nugent, who is outspoken in his political beliefs yet respect total crud-puds like Fowley, who took advantage of scores of females. The white Bill Cosby.

There is a lot of this stuff in the 'entertainment world' in general, past and present. Lots of bad sex and miserable creeps getting it however they can. Not heard about what happened with that one kid in The Palace Guard group of L.A.? It wasn't just underage girls.

Fowley only ever cast a large shadow in a small pond as far as I can tell, more like a mostly forgotten U.S. Jimmy Savile rather than a Cosby. Not to excuse him anything but after reading that he also seems very small scale even as a rapist.

If you've ever envied someone getting someplace you wanted to get to think about stories like this one. Good on Jackie for spilling the beans on the vampire, I was called a 'mouthy bitch' just a few days ago so I don't think the '70s were so different. Maybe you never had weird old guys follow you to junior high school waving whatever equivalent of candy/job/ride/stuff/drugs/etc they thought might get them somewhere, but I did, and then at school had to hide in the library from a P.E. teacher everyone including the librarian seemed to know a lot about as a weirdo. :lol:

It's not politically-correct to say...but Jackie paid the asking price for her (short)
ride on Kim's bandwagon. Confronting him would have been principled...whining
publically now that he's safely tucked into his casket reeks of moral cowardice.
 
Not to argue with you, Dave, but Jackie did try to meet & confront Fowley; if you read the entire article, he ignored her e-mails.
Blaming the victim and not the aggressor is always the cowardice opinion, IMO.

Not blaming the victim (which I'm sure she was)...just saying that Fowley was well-known
for being extremely toxic to teenyboppers by almost everybody on the The Strip back then.
I probably blame Jackie's family most of all for allowing her into such a potentially hazardous
environment for the sake of 'fame and fortune'...but if you make a deal with the devil, you
gonna' burn, baby, burn. If she was my daughter, I would have fully vetted Fowley and bailed
on the Runaways deal faster than my little girl could tune up her four-string.
 
Kari Krome was even younger and didn't have parents around to protect her. I have to admit though I lost empathy for Jackie a bit after one quaalude, she kept taking them even though she hadn't much experience with any substances? I still won't ever snort that white stuff no matter if everyone else is even if only just because I've seen too many people become massive jerks on that.

Is it okay yet to say that P.J. Proby was a creep? Or 'Papa' John Phillips? Michael Jackson? Oh come on, at least Phil Spector... wow, fans... even Charles Manson has some! :wtf:
 
Doesn't matter what external circumstances came into play beforehand. Transference of partial blame due to external circumstances is unjustified.

Fowley raped an underage girl in front of dozens of his followers. And lauded it up, according to witnesses. Can't get any lower as a male human being. And I'm sure it wasn't the first time he raped an under-aged girl.
To excuse him because he behaved in his usual decadent manner is inane and inexcusable.

Blaming it on the times, the era, the drugs, the lifestyle...doesn't matter. He should be judged as the low-life asshole after death as he was during his life. Should Jackie have bailed right after? Yeah. So what?

Joan Jett should be viewed in the same manner., denying the event took place, and telling a witness later to deny everything if he got a phone call from an attorney - talk about a hypocrite. And she was over 18 at the time (20 years old).

Just proves that a lot of rock & roll folks are sociopaths, plain 'n simple. Just look at the ad Fowley placed in the back of that magazine during 1975. Grade A asshole.

I recall a documentary years back that featured Cherie Currie describing such a scene and outright calling Fowley a pedophile. He was obviously a sleaze and admitted it in interviews and his own writings. He was lucky to have gotten away with it, like Jimmy Savile. Currie somehow was able to overlook this side and took care of Fowley in his last days.

I read Ian Whitcomb's autobiography when I was in high school - it was one of the few interesting music books available to me, and he recounts his disgust at seeing an obese Herman's Hermits roadie getting sloppy thirds or fourths with a teenybopper who had been persuaded to come back to the motel.

Another book about the LA scene discussed the endless supply of neglected teens exploited in all sorts of ways in the rock world of the '60s and 70s. An age-old problem.
