Might thy aural newbies tickle my eye

Raving about classic head-trips on a garage-forum might be fruitless and indeed the low rating of their Candy Floss 45 in TBM should be enough to keep me from posting this, but "Trip Through Hell" has been such a revelatory listen to the typers once young brain - even with one channel missing. The poor sound of that atrocious Psycho-boot must still be locked in my synapses as listening to an original for the 1st time today was like seeing a well-known room for the first time with open curtains. "Cold Spider" in clean sound provoked serious flashbacks and seein the sleeve art in all clarity is the perfect companion to the music.

Now let the horn-hatred start.

How about something for playing the aural newbies that tickle my stuff.

Estate sale find.

And $4 and a few ounces of vinegar later (battery acid!) I've got a functioning portable to replace my scary looking electric Fisher Price player.

I say functioning... 33rpms doesn't work, but that's actually a good thing, right?

My birthday present from a few months back. Was still in its box and unused for 50ish years it hums a little and the turntable has an audible noise too but turn it up full blast and it covers most background sound.

and just to remember us on one of your many enviable finds: how much was that Askel again?
Not cheap actually.... it cost me the entire Deeek catalogue and a slammed non-playing copy of the Knights Bridge on Sea Ell.

I'm surprised you trust the needle on that thing...

Howdy!

Some recent pickings from the world wide web

I like this. Some may perhaps find it cheesy but I think it's got a tough enough attitude to warrant my attention.

Primitive and you just got to love the naiveté of picture sleeves lie this. I do. Muchly. This is a quantity find, yes?

What a band! Surely one of the most undeservedly ignored bands of it's genre & worthy of a compilation! They must have had someone believing in them, it seems like a lot of money was invested in their 45s (bar the 1st one perhaps) Stellar production, 2 picture sleeves and professional ones at that. One of my new favorite bands, thanks goes out to Colin for making us infidels aware of such forgotten greatness.

Including the flip sleeve for the non-collecting music lovers out there.

This song is so incredibly good! Sticker a charming bonus.

Finally got a copy of the first pressing of this. Was not even aware of it being the first press of the world's perhaps greatest song until MTM posted a scan of it. Big, manly bear hug goes out to you! :tiphat:Hard to find a clean copy. Even this plays with some interference at the high notes.

Re-bought a 45 I regretted selling. This time a really clean copy, a sonic treat from one of my favorite UK beat bands. Ignorant f as I am had not noticed this Immediate company sleeve design either until recently.

And speaking of favorite UK beat. The Yardbirds were my gateway into both UK beat, upping my spending money on rare records and also led to the additional discovery of what some of us like to call freakbeat (not that the Yardbirds were freakbeat). I remember some almost 20 years ago when I blew the remainder of that month's food budget at a record fair because I bought the Swedish Yardbirds lp with the famous full band shot:

My girlfriend, later to become wife, mother of my oldest daughter, even later ex-wife, sat at home waiting for me because I had all our money with me. I freaked out because I had used all of it, got drunk, lost the house keys & somehow made up for it. But the lp was mine! Later sold to a mad Italian collector.

But I digress. For your love might possibly be amongst my top 5 tunes. Now I'm trying to complete my Yardbirds UK 45s and just recently picked this up at a very reasonable price. Stellar 45 as well!

How Cameo Parkway allowed this 45 to be released with an art sleeve like this is beyond me but I am very appreciative someone let it happen!

I did not know about this 45 and it's picture sleeve until Teenbeat Mayhem. A fab photo!

Last but not least, the very epitome of bonehead crunchers. And really hard to find in any shape or release. never seen the US Prince release and my copy is the first European release I've come across for the 2 years that I have been searching for it. Probably hated by the masses but I like it. Fuzzzzzzz......

More to come next week.

A really cool PS + one of the Bonehead Holy Grails!

And then for an added design bonus. My father was also a collector, he was probably responsible for me becoming one as well. Here are some great cut-out cigaret package designs he collected as a young man. Enjoy!

This local release is making it way back home to San Diego. Grabbed it cheap today after it slipped through the 'bay....

Hit the road today and returned to a spot I hit once a year and found very FEW new records. A little disheartening, especially after a rod went through the sidewall of my tire at a Salvation Army in Big Spring. They didn't even have 45s. Wound up wasting 2 hours of precious digging time going to 4 different shops before finding a replacement tire. AAAARGH!

Anyhow... while rifling through the last handful of 45s I noticed a Vandan label peaking through a a few centerholes. Riley Crabtree? The Nightcaps?

Nope...

Noticed a small crack in the edge right away. And I have never seen so much dust on a 45. This is just layer upon caked on layer of fine dust. Cleanings then revealed some other crusty gunk.

Anyhowdy.... I don't know what all this talk is about low fidelity. This monster be LOUD, dad.

Really like the PS on this. A 2-sider. Prefer the moody I won't cry myself. Extra scans added for you scan fanatics out there!

Two more for the road

And last, but not at all least: one of the top F*cking fabbbest slices of early 70s hard rock. It's so good I get goosebumps each and everytime I play it. This is how the Misfits would have sounded in 1972. The subtle back up vocals, the melody, the fuzz. The Voice. Equal to Volt Rush Band, Inside + a few select others I do not yet own. This is what we all live for, the adrenalin kick of a 45 bursting with the right ingredients.
